No, it's not an April Fool. At least, I hope not - I just bought it!
Congratulations, Sax - how do you feel? Do you plan to get very drunk at the launch tonight?

Right, I've just brought it offa Amazon, and, Sax, it better be good 'cause otherwise I'm gonna take all £15 worth out on your pretty little head, and you won't be able to do anything about it 'cause you're nothing but a poncey author.

'cause you're nothing but a poncey author

Bet you wouldn't of said that to Papa Hemingway or the late great Hunter S if you'd known them boss.

Congratulations Sax.

Yes, Boboss, you should read a biography of Hunter S Thompson to teach you that not all writers are sissy boys, much like you should listen to The Downward Spiral to teach you that rock is NOT dead, and read, uh, Crowley or something to reach you that POW! ZAM! magic is not just for kids!

Sax, will it be in the Farringdon branch of Books Etc by 12.30pm today?

Well, thanks muchly, folks. ABout 60 people coming to a launch at Waterstone's tonight, and after swanning around all morning with a very authorial swagger I've just suddenly started bricking it.

And what's worse, I have to stay in work all day AND conduct a load of staff appraisals, which is most definitely not authorish at all.

But I shall be going to have sex with a marlin and wrestle a bear later, and possibly even drink some beer. Papa would be so proud.

You can write all the appraisals in a suitably 'literary' style.
Or add 'write a novel' to each person's list of objectives and then tell them off for missing it.

The publicity thing must be a nightmare for many first novelists. I'd be doing poo-bads in my pants, fearful that I wouldn't be anywhere near as amusing as my product.

I'd probably have to don my charming suit (get pissed).

Just be careful with the marlin Sax. There's a right end and a wrong end and I'd hate to see your writing career end in tradegy so early

Sax: I'm well up for a copy of this, but I have a question...
I'm all for supporting my local independent bookshop, and would like to order it from there... but would it be better for your sales figures or whatever if I bought it from, I dunno, Borders or somewhere?

My God.

I suppose fortune does favour the brave, but possibly arguably maybe not to that extent.

I haven't finished it yet, the novel, but I, along with everyone else who was in the audience, have seen the writer give generously, of himself.

Hemmingway, or I think anyone really, would have baulked at that perhaps, going quite so far. Like, 'It's only a book, man,' people would've said, 'Keep your trousers on.' They'd have said that as a euphemism, as a figure of speech.

It was good of you to come, Alex. Especially with that... thing on your face.

It went well. Had a couple of liveners beforehand to give me a bit of courage and got hammered immediately after.

Profile shot is good. And I do hope you took home those huge "Waterstone's Welcomes" banners and rolled naked in them whooping, a la the million-dollars bed scene in Indecent Proposal. And if you didn't, why the hell not?

Not shamelessly pushing this up to the top (oh, go on then, I am) but it occurred to me today that I only answered Stoatie's question

Sax: I'm well up for a copy of this, but I have a question...

in my head. The right answer is that it doesn't matter where it's ordered from, really. So support your local bookshop!

Alex's Grandma

I ordered a copy from the local bookshop the other afternoon - presumably they'll be getting it off Amazon like anyone else would, but they still reckoned ten to twelve days for delivery, so either a) they're a bit untogether there, or b) Hinterland is flying off the shelves faster than expected, and is well on it's way to being this summer's must-have beach read.

From St Tropez down to Goa, this season's possibly going to be all about angst re: 3/4 length trousers, in much the same way that the last couple have been largely to do with all the terrible things that may or may not have happened to the Virgin Mary, y'know, afterwards.

It'd have to be a positive development, let's face it.

On the other hand though, maybe Sax doesn't really belong to 'us' any more. Perhaps he's now the world's ( insert whatever thing it is that Sax has meant to you, over the years. )

Thanks, Sax... that's the answer I was hoping for. And I haven't been able to get it yet anyway, as I've been skint. So next payday (about a fortnight and change, by my reckoning) I'll be ordering me one o' they buggers.
