April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory with desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
- T.S. Eliot, 'The Wasteland'

equals:

IT CAME FROM THE SEA
SAT APR 02 10-2 £5/4
THE SUSSEX ARTS CLUB

following on from march's straight-up sold-out spectacular, we're back like cooked crack for all hearts, all minds between here and the water line. last month was awesome, again, and the difference is YOU. so get down early so we can pay you back the only way we know…

too cruel for school: new kinds of HOTT courtesy of PETEY PABLO, SLEATER-KINNEY, BECK, GWEN STEFANI, BRAZILIAN GIRLS, VITALIC, STEREO TOTAL, JIN, THE MOGS, CANTANKEROUS, JEANS TEAM, FRANZ FERDINAND, WHO MADE WHO, KAOS and EBONY EYEZ. mix in recent FIRE from M.I.A., SOULWAX, FANNYPACK, DAFT PUNK, THE FUTUREHEADS, JAY-Z & AMERIE, PANICO, LADY SOVEREIGN, DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979, FISCHERSPOONER, SCENARIO ROCK, LE TIGRE, DIPLO, BLUES EXPLOSION, TTC, PANTHERS, DADDY YANKEE, MORNINGWOOD, LIL JON and LETHAL BIZZLE. goto www.voodoolily.co.uk (music) to witness previous setlists.

april sees a second crop of slide artists making a triumphant entrance. first up, we offered Plan B Magazine's infamous Miss AMP the chance to document the broken leg she recently sustained right here in the treacherous sussex countryside. the resultant frontline photographic reportage is both graphic and colourful. alongside, lee may foster has gifted us some dreamy illos that will wrap around yr forebrain like a tropical fever. and to round it off this time, chris castro brings stencilism to the masses with some DIY agit-prop. buy. them. drinks. maybe they will redecorate yr bedroom.

goto www.voodoolily.co.uk (news) for the slideshow so far, lovingly reproduced for ecstatic home parties everywhere. artists will soon have their own pages on voodoo lily with their own links, info etc. buy. their. work. maybe you won't go to hell just yet.

also: thx to keilly for last month's avant-garde birthday cakes – they were exceedingly good, you are spoiling us etc. this month, we'd like to introduce, in the bar, the undoubted talents of george (vox) and robin (piano). classy. and say hello to laura in the cloakroom. she pretty much lives for this.

oh, and: "…it seems everyone and their evil twin is talking about It Came from the Sea. Explosively stylish…a DIY conspiracy, a cult success, a Brighton nightlife legend-in-the-making – with both atmosphere and attitude to burn." (Latest Homes/Seven)

ears. are. burning.

Well, a whole load of us Brightoners will be there.
Me, Pap, Fraely, Gumbitch, MacGyver (if he's back from his travels), Meme Buggerer, and possibly GGM and Quantum.

ooh la la. i shall invoke the special Barbelithian *special* entry price. message me with the names you'd like on the £3 list.

and, like i say, it's literally imperative you get down early - we've been sold out by elevenish the last two months, and there were queues long before. my sneaky tip? get down *before* ten - they'll let you have a civilised drinky in the bar, and when we throw open the doors you can stroll straight in.

I will be there - intend to come down in the afternoon if the weather's good. Would other Barbelith Brighton peeps like to meet up beforehand? I will gladly smoke the figurative peace pipe* with any of you who despite my deep love and affection I have called a cockfarmer or been called a cockfarmer by on account of an argument about music or something...

*Ce n'est pas un pipe de peace.

and so...

did barbe-people have a good time in the community?

we did. except i got too drunk to be fully-operational. and my headphones kept exploding. and we kept losing the smoke machine remote control. and then i went to a party after. and fell asleep. and woke up. and was moderately hung-over.

I had an amazing time - best one since the heady days of Summer 03, the last time Barbelith descended on ICFTS like a wolf on the fold. I danced to:

LCD Soundsystem - 'Disco Infiltrator', 'Daft Punk Is Playing At My House'
Petey Pablo – 'Get On This Motorcycle', 'Vibrate'
Lady Sovereign - 'Random'
Lethal Bizzle - 'Pow!'
Fischerspooner – 'Just Let Go'
Vitalic – 'My Friend Dario'
M.I.A. – '10 Dollar'
Soulwax – 'E-Talking (Nite Version)'

...And lots more. The next one is May 7th, right? I wasn't planning on coming to that but I think I might have to now...

A righteous evening indeed. Danced my ass off, and got ludicrously drunk. Thanks for the good hosting.

Aye, that was great. Good to finally meet some of the Brighton barbelith lot. I think I'll have to come to the next one.

Hmmm, I was quite rubbish and anti-social and didn't really meet anyone or talk to anyone I'd already met, which I was actively regretting while I was standing right next to everyone. Great last half hour!!

anecdotes are still filtering through, but a girl in the queue outside got her toes ran over by a taxi (stop making the 'ouch' face, she was fine, made it in eventually - didn't dance much though).

for the next one, the pianist/singer in the bar are going to learn some of our ICFTHS super-hits and play them in what i suspect may be a laid-back, ironic manner. and we've bought a sampler, so will probably stud all future sets with inappropriate samples, like westwood-flava gunshots over annie songs an' ting.

For the real Westwood flavour you need to put an "explosion" sound on after the first minute of the song, then rewind...

those sounds are just vengeful, ignored mcs taking shots at his van, and the occasional volley of return fire, strictly self-defense. you DON'T understand how he's living. he ISN'T unhealthily obsessed with guns since he got 'wetted' that time.

i had a fine sweaty night on saturday. was going to be more social, conciliatory even, but suspected many were having as good a time as i and didn't really need it. wasn't too drunk to talk, no no.

I had a great time, despite an hour in the queue. My girl knew the bouncer, and I knew the pianist, but I didn't manage to meet any of you guys, which was a bit of a shame. Hope I can make it to the next one, but i think the TG birthday party might be on the same day.

Fucking amazing and excellent and far too much white stuff. Was a pretty rubbish "party" afterwards, though, eh?

I think you guys are well on yr way to being Brighton's hottest night. Will be there with the whistle, dummy, Vicks and white gloves next time.
