I really like ‘Dare’ – I think it illustrates that Albarn has always had this gift for turning bandwagon-jumping into an art that actually yields great results. So often, you can tell exactly what he’s been listening to when a record he’s been involved with is released. There are some obvious examples, but the arguably less obvious one that always sticks in my mind is that when everyone was obsessed with Spiritualised and gospel choirs, Blur dropped ‘Tender’, which arguably stands up as well as anything else from that period. Anyway, ‘Dare’ comes across as a pretty obvious attempt to make a DFA track, but I think it achieves many of the things that DFA tracks achieve – ie, primarily, it makes you want to dance. Plus it finds a better use for Shaun Ryder than he’s had in a while… |
