so, what do you think?
is Banksy just jerking himself off or is this a noble "statement"?
I think it's probably meant to be an insightful joke, which isn't a bad thing and is a statement but any discussion of "noble statements" implies a lack of humour in his work when that's extremely central to it. His method of hanging those paintings, bearded, trussed up in a flashers coat, reminded me of some ridiculous '70s film. It felt like a homage. This action only becomes a statement about the inaccessibility of the art world because we all know that the part targetted is ridiculously exclusive.
do you consider this a step-up from his grafitti, or just the reverse?
Neither, it's something different. I actually think that Banksy is becoming an incredibly important person, he's following the trajectory of some of the most important artists of the last few centuries, his work could be worth dangerous amounts of money if someone on the inside gets in to it. That's really the problem with leaving a picture in a gallery, it's in the hands of the money-makers and the dealers whereas his grafitti is only in the hands of the public.
do you think he'll continue to do more of this kind of thing, or will he return to grafitti, or will he move on to something else?
I like Banksy's grafitti. Subverting the art establishments is nice but I prefer permanent artwork that I can view anytime for free. |
