Wi-fi access in London that doesn't cost the earth

Every time I've been to Ray's Jazz lately, I've been unable to get any Airport action on my iBook. This means that, after paying for a hot drink and some biscotti, I then have to wander down Charing CRoss Road to the internet cafe and pay to go online. Which means I am essentially paying twice, as I wouldn't be buying the drink in Ray's Jazz if I didn't want to access the internet. Not to mention that lugging my laptop around is kind of a pain if I don't really get to use it.

I don't go online very often, never usually more than ten hours a month, and usually only a couple of hours every ten days. Since I have the Airport ability, I'd like to make the most of it, but I need to know of more places I can go. I refuse to pay six pounds an hour, like it is at the Royal Festival Hall, but I don't expect it to be completely free. (Like at Ray's Jazz, the cost of a drink or food covers the use of their wi-fi which is otherwise free, but I think using it without buying something is taking the piss as that cafe is so small and always really busy)

Ideally, I'd like to find somewhere nice in Camden or Swiss Cottage or somewhere like that, so that I can walk there, which would save on bus tickets and get me exercise. But anywhere that's reachable by bus from Camden would probably be okay.

[And a note for anyone who wants to be clever -- I do plan to get online at home, but there's no point at the moment. Until the person I live with gets their PC and we know it can access a wi-fi network too, I'm holding off. And wi-fi is the preferred option because we don't want trailing cables from the phonejack across the entire flat, especially as our hall is the size of a postage stamp.]

Hmm... I pretty much refuse to pay for wi-fi myself, though once when I was drunk I was tempted. Anyway, if I were you I'd just pull out my laptop in Camden and test out where you get a signal. You'll almost certainly be able to pick up some wi-fi you can piggyback onto. That said, you can definitely get free wi-fi action on Southampton Row just of High Holborn.

The Apple store on regent street has free wifi, nice seats in the presentation theatre and plenty of power points for charging.

I'm told the gizmondo shop down the road has wifi too but honestly, why would you go there?

Yeah I think that Southampton Row one is from the Ask Jeeves offices. You can get it on the far edge of the Eat opposite Holborn station which also has pwoer points.

That's all very well, but in this cold and wet weather, I have no desire to sit outside to post on the internet... :] Not to mention that taking one's laptop out of one's bag in every single cafe just on the offchance is just asking to be mugged...

I know about the Mac store.

I also discovered at the weekend that there is a wi-fi zone in the Bic Chill cafe just off Brick Lane, which means good music and good cocktails to go with your browsing.

Isn't there a website that maps the free-access wi-fi nodes in London (aside from Warchalking, is that still noting them down?)

If there isn't one (I haven't been able to find a good one, hence my questions here), then why isn't there one? Shit, if I was online often enough, maybe I would do it myself...
