So, Benny, you decided to troll the board, in effect, sticking irrelevant posts into thread after thread, for what, exactly? What would a new member feel if he or she were to find that any thread he or she might have posted would be forced out of view not on its merits but because of a flurry of one-word posts to old threads? I'm finding it hard to express how low my opinion of this whole wretched display of half-wittedness is. The mistake Petey Shaftoe made, as far as I can tell, was in not moving to delete the thread rather than just lock it, with the result that this hapless display of Red Arrows inanity has developed.

I posted ages ago that the only way to get rid of that post was to do what I did, but had a guilt trip about it - I've just grown bored (along with some others) of that damned thread, which is constantly knocking conversations off. Note, I only posted on threads that were on the first page, so they are still there, still at the top - the last two created posts were to ensure the thread went - so the threads, the conversations are open - I can just as easily move to have all of the posts deleted. No I don't think that trolling because I am so important to deem what sits at the top is best, but it did the job, and in a better way, I decided, than just moving to have the post deleted.

Now put it bed, smoothly donate the £50 to the board, if you want, but let the damned thing go.

However, rather than posting on throwing your weight around telling people what pricks they are, how about you use the PM button? If you have a problem with the manner in which I did the posting, bring it up there.

Would it be unfair of me to point out that you haven't stopped the thread? You have, in fact, just created two more threads about the thread, which is itself still going. Since you appear to be trying to post an HTML page rather than a screencap, Mistoffeles or somebody else will just claim that you have doctored the HTML in Notepad. And round we go again.

I agree entirely that the thread is a pain, but spamming the board (spamming, not trolling - you're right. Poor choice of words, there) is also a pain, and also has not worked. If you were that sick of it, you had the option of starting a thread in the Policy asking what to do about it. You chose instead, whatever your intentions, to spam the board. You stuck gibberish in dozens of threads which might be read by people who don't care about Smoothly's CFP for the OCD.

As for PMing - why would I want to do that? This is a board issue. Personally, I'm board to tears by it. Hopefully, the thread will be deleted. Otherwise we will just have to work something else out.

Well, what do you want a constructive response to? I have explained my reasons for recent moderation requests elsewhere.

If you mean a constructive response to your demand that I step down as a moderator - I am always ready to consider such requests. However, not respecting an individual other poster on Barbelith is not in itself a convincing reason why a moderator should step down. This has been discussed before - the short version is that the distributed model of moderation allows members to do their moderator duties while also being able to act as private citizens, as long as they do their best to be impartial when actually wearing the moderator hat. The need for motions to be agreed by other moderators means that individual dislikes or likes will generally be balanced out, and the existence of a veto prevents unilateral action.

So, as a private individual right now my opinion of you is pretty negative. You have accused fellow moderators and long-standing members of the board of corruption. You have tried to turn an unsustainable situation you have helped to create into a specious argument about freedom of speech. Most of all, you just seem to me to be a bit of an idiot, which means that I cannot think to myself "well, he is highly-strung and immature, but at least he has interesting things to say about x" - because so far you haven't, at least not where I have seen them. However, Barbelith is to an extent accepting of different ideas about what constitutes a worthwhile discussion. Therefore that only becomes an issue when you start irresponsibly throwing around demands that moderators, for example, step down, or when you subsequently lose it and start following me around trolling, or spam the board demanding I be kicked off. We've been through this a few times now, and it doesn't get any more interesting.

Naturally I was rather disappointed to find that we were talking about the 'thread that never dies' and how evil Haus is again. I have to confess to being a little intrigued by the strength of feeling that thread generated. Some hated it with a white-hot passion long before any spamming. I was as happy as anyone to see it conclude, but golly, what a way to go. Obliterated from the face of the board amid a chorus of curses. A request for a lock turned down because the first time it was locked, people complained. Has a thread that doesn't contain anything illegal or offensive, that was contributed to by that many members, ever been deleted from the Conversation before?
And now people are loath to say another on the subject - ashamed that it ever existed. I'm a bit baffled to be honest. I'm going to go and have a look at some of the other game threads I've been ignoring for god knows how long to see what I must have been missing.

Doesn't really stun me. People do seem to get these PMs of support. Modzero couldn't move for them. We're following a pretty well-worn path, here.

The case of Petey Shaftoe is instructive - his locking of the thread, aimed primarily by his own admission at ending the horror, was adjudged to be ultra vires and undone by other moderators. No harm, no foul. It also required a minimum of fixing, unlike the deletion requests of BtB's posts the moderators have had to wade through today. So, if we're not demanding BtB leaves Barbelith, which would be excessive, I don't see why attempts to achieve the same goal by less disruptive ends should spark mass falling on swords... If you have a genuine complaint, make it in the Policy.

My deletion request was adjudged to be sensible by other moderators, in light of how badly people were now starting to behave, and was approved. If you miss the thread, you can view it here.

Dude, this is by no means exceptional. Game threads often fall into utter ghastliness and shame - it's just they usually don't also lead to people carrying them over into other threads (or dozens of other threads). Witness the increasingly frenetic cries of "WHAT ARE THE RULES" in the Mornington Crescent threads... the presence of a possible financial reward was probably a factor, as it meant, for example, that Petey's lock could be represented as motivated by greeeeeeeeed.

Or Mafia! My God, Mafia... a game designed to foment untrustworthiness and paranoia on a board famous for its members occasionally tenuous grasp on reality. That had some horrible moments where the game took over people's lives.

A lot depends on parameters. You set up a challenge with, essentially, no parameters apart from "keep posting to this thread until everyone else surrenders". That's like "protect humanity from the mutant menace"...

Indeed. When I made a vague attempt to verify his achievement, it seemed that his tactic was to systematically boost the 30 threads below the game thread, up one position in turn, thus forcing only one front-page thread onto page 2, ie. the 'This Thread Must Die' thread. Also, bearing in mind that this is the Conversation, you could barely tell that the pointless bump post is out of place in some of the affected topics.
So a careless and inconsiderate strategy carried out as carefully and considerately as possible, I'd have said.
Also, in his defence, he has PMed me to insist that the £50 goes to the Barbelith fund.
