I'm not sure this is the best song to do it with, but I like the idea.
But the two problems I forsee are this: the band might not be to happy with this, perhaps even not happy enough to pursue legal action; and you're bound to be very restricted once you really get going... you're going to want to go in one direction or another, but won't be able to because it doesn't fit with the lyrics.
Maybe try making each chapter a song title? Or a lyrics from a different song? This gives you alot more freedom, and if you don't restrict all songs to the same band, will lessen the likelyhood of anyone becoming angry (if Murakami can reference a million songs/bands/albums, so can you).
Of course, this won't work if it's just a gimic. The character has to have some relation to the music - either he's a fan, a DJ, or someone in the industry.
The lyrics you have there make me think how funny it would be if the character was a demented Talking Heads fan who stalked members of the band ("You oughta know not to stand by the window somebody might see you up there"), attempted to contact them insesently ("ransmit the message, to the receiver, hope for an answer some day"), and even tried to kill them ("Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons, packed up and ready to go"). But as I said, restricting yourself to this song would greatly limit you.
Anyway, you're not crazy. I think you've got something here, but you just haven't quite nailed it yet. |
