Doom 3

Right, I know there's already a few games threads but look, it's Doom 3, and maybe it's been out for a while but, you know, it's Doom 3.

It's really fucking scary. The graphics are really good. Uh. it's like being in an FMV from an older game. All shiny and reflective, working mirrors- fucking disturbing monsters. Really, they've found a balance between the fact that the Doom monsters are always a bit cannon fodder, and making them actually scary.

That big fucking hippo thing jumps in thru a window, for example.

So, anyone else played it?

This is why we have an entire videogames thread, for VIDEOGAMES.

Spunkmuffin.

Yeah, but I don't see why we can't have more focused game discussion.

We so can have a mroe focused discussion. See the Halo 2 thread for details. What I find interesting about Doom 3 though is that the graphics are top (obviously)and the story is actually rahter good and told in a quite engagingly non-linear fashion through collected PDAs of devoured co-workers etc.but the sheer unremitting evil of the 'Basic FPS Template Game Design' monsters behind you etc. makes the whole thing a rather more mixed bag.

So in short. Start good, end good, middle redefines hell as boredom.

After I got over the initial "Oh my god! This game is so good looking and so scary and Oh my god!" I found the whole thing to be thoroughly repetetive and quite boring.
Ooh it's dark. Ooh there's a monster. Shoot it! Ooh it's dark. Ooh there's a monster....etc etc

When a game redefines graphics and sound like this one did, it's a real shame that it did nothing new with how it plays.

doom 3 worried my poor soul to play for too long. It was spankingly gorgeous though. Like a relationship with a hot Satanist.

And one thread is also a pitiful amount of space to discuss an entire medium.

Pot.

I got bored of this so quick I couldn't be bothered to finish it. I sold it to a friend. A friend that I don't like too much that it.

It is far, far too close to the original doom.

Although the graphics are shiny, there are still problems. The super hi-res panels and screens look out of place against the grainier walls; people's heads still have the hexagon thing going on.

In fact, the hexagon-head thing annoys me in pretty much any video game. Why can no-one manage to make a head look even vaguely curved? They either look like Kryten from Red Dwarf above the forehead, or have a crude coverup with an odd haircut.

That, and all the character models have stupidly big long arms.

The "hexagon thing" is a result of how the Doom 3 engine works - they purposefully made the characters low poly, because the high-detail textures are supposed to make up for all the sharp edges. It doesn't work, imo, but it's the result of a design decision.

Why can no-one manage to make a head look even vaguely curved?

Dude, there are plenty of games out there featuring characters with properly rounded noggins.
