SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES

DEADLIGHT STUDIOS is looking for submissions for an upcoming horror anthology entitled DEADLIGHT THEATRE. We aim to showcase new writing and artistic talent in horror comics. The anthology is tentatively scheduled for a summer release with hopes of worldwide distribution through Diamond. We will have an open submissions policy until further notice.

Keep in mind that horror does not necessarily mean zombies and vampires. We are looking for stories that span the horror genre. TALES FROM THE CRYPT published visually arresting horror stories. Robert Kirkman’s THE WALKING DEAD is an emotionally jarring horror story. Both are good examples of horror from opposite ends of the spectrum. The bottom line is that we want good stories.

It should be noted that all submissions are contributions as we are not currently in the position to pay anyone.

E-mail your submissions to submissions@deadlightstudios.com. Thoroughly read the below guidelines before submitting.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to reading and viewing your submissions.

Sincerely,
Steve and Brian
Submissions Co-Editors

Complete Projects

We encourage complete project submissions. This means a well-written, three to eight page story complete with artwork of a professional caliber. If the artwork is not lettered be sure to include the script with your submission. We encourage complete projects and these submissions will be given preference over lone scripts and solitary artwork submissions.

1. In the subject line of the e-mail, please write ‘Complete Project’ and the title (ex. ‘Complete Project—‘Scary Zombie Story’). Files should be named similarly.

2. Please include contact information for all parties involved in the body of the e-mail and as part of each file submitted.

Artists

DEADLIGHT THEATRE urgently needs illustrators who are capable of telling good story with pictures. Send us three examples of your best artwork. At least two of your pieces must be sequential art. We do not want random artwork or pictures of scary monsters and super creeps. Our main objective is to be able to gauge your skill as a graphic storyteller. Grayscale submissions are preferable, though not necessary. If you would like a sample script to work from, please e-mail Steve or Brian.

1. Attached files are to be either in JPG or low-resolution TIF format and not more than one megabyte.

2. You may send a maximum of three files per e-mail. If we want to see more, we will request it.

3. Alternately, you can send a link to a website where your art is posted. Please be sure that the link takes us directly to the pieces you are submitting and that they are clearly marked as such on the web page. We will not trawl through your website looking for your work.

4. The subject line of your submission e-mail should be ‘Art Submission’ followed by your name (ex. ‘Art Submission—Joe Smith’). Files should be named similarly.

5. Please include your contact information in the body of the e-mail and in each attached file.

Writers

We are looking for complete and original horror scripts. Any ideas or outlines will be rejected without reply. Optimal script length is between three and eight pages. Scripts shorter than three pages will be considered, but are notoriously difficult to write. Anything longer than eight pages will be considered, though most likely be rejected. In all cases manuscripts should be no longer than ten pages.

We want marketable horror. This doesn’t necessarily mean the traditional formulas and heavy gore. Give us something new and fresh; something that’s you. Please keep profanity and sexual content to a minimum. Pure exploitation will be rejected. Even if you have written an excellent story, these things will hinder acceptance.

1. Please send submissions as attachments, Rich Text Format.rtf or Word.doc only. If you have converted your original file to either of the two aforementioned formats, please check to ensure that the formatting has not been corrupted.

2. Include your contact information at the top of your manuscript, tell us the story length in comic book pages, and number your manuscript pages.

3. Write your name and the title of the story in the subject line of the e-mail (ex. ‘Joe Smith—Scary Zombie Story’). Files should be named similarly.

4. State the title of the script, your full contact details, and the comic book page length of your story in the body of the e-mail.

If anyone has questions concerning how to write a comic book script or wants advice on how to layout illustrations on a page, I refer you to the DEADLIGHT STUDIOS forum at www.deadlightstudios.com. There many people there who are always willing to give advice.

Good luck!

Actually I just submitted a rewrite of a script last night(yup I work for 'em but still go through the channels)if any other artists are interested. Pop me a link or email some samples. I can send a copy of the script as well. It's a five pager so not a major load.

Hey, lukabeast. I remember you from that Eric Larsen exercise on the Scryptic Studios forum. I'll send you a script in a bit.

Hey yeah, that was me. Wow that was some time ago heh heh. Looking forward to your submission Bradley. My visits to Scryptic Studios have dropped off a bit, still trying to catch up with their new content / design, but the hours whip by so fast these days, it gets hard to juggle things. Glad to hear from ya.

Is this purely serious Poe-ish stuff, or is cheesy-horror-scifi stuff welcomed aswell?

Poe and cheesy are both welcome, perhaps even within the same script. LOL.

The main requirements that Steve and Brian (the submission editors)will look for are

1) A well written story (believe me, I tried to pass a fractured David Lynch type thing past them, heh heh) not to say it can't be experimental. They're willing to help you mold the thing as well, very nice guys.

2) Contain Horror Elements. So any cross-genre stuff should work, Poe to splatter, demure to piss-pants-funny. In the end the anthology should really contain of wide variety of styles that cover all ends of the horror genre.

Just wanted to let everyone know that there are still a couple spots left to be filled for the first issue, so the early bird may once again get the worm.

mmmm....worms.

Are you keeping a spot open for those who have already started but not delivered, like moi?

hee hee, I'm not that would happen even for myself. Essentially Issue 1 is almost full, and a few stories have been lined up for issue 2. If a "complete" submission was to be sent in (story, pencils, inks, letters) and was approved for entry, chances are it would get into the first issue. This is as of a couple days ago though. Things change fast, so you may have to take this with a grain of salt I'm afraid.
