Oh yeah, the Lucksmiths are fantastic. I recently started devouring them as part of my manic hunger for all things twee pop.

So far my favorite Lucksmiths album is Naturaliste. The standout songs for me are "Camera Shy" and "Stayaway Stars." Both so gorgeous and fun.

Which of their albums would you recommend most?

Can definately agree that doses `Twee Pop is a needful thing

Naturaliste is my favourite aswell...i find every song a gem especially 'The Sandringham Line','Midweek Midmorning' and 'There is a Boy who never goes out',

I’ve woken up on one too many floors
But my favourite was yours

Why that doesn't Surprise Me is a great album; it has a few jumps, some different instrumentation here and there, but songs such as 'How to Tie a Tie' and 'The Year Of Driving Langourously' and basically all the others have some of the sweetest, emotive lyrics they have ever written.

First TapeI find way too cute sometimes, a leaping puppy of an album, fuses to your soul though and I don't know why...love it.

Good Kind of Nervousis also full of gooey sweetness, more storytelling than the others, but probably the best of the rest.

could go on, ramble about favourite lyrics and their other albums, but work hollers alas...but anyway, just saw that they are touring your neck of the sphere in May...Philly.USA...you lucky fictionsuit

The only track by them I know is The Year of Driving Languourously (that's not spelt right, is it?), which I really love. The fact they have so many albums has kind of put me off buying any -- I've been burnt by that in the past, ending up with the shit stuff instead of the good stuff...

aye, been burnt many a time myself via inconsistant/rushed albums, the Lucksmiths do have a couple in my little opinion, ('The Green Bicycle Case' and 'Staring at the Sky'), yet they are the favourites ones of a well respected friend.
....but 'Naturaliste' and 'Good Kind of Nervous' really are just pure yumska...

below are some of the lyrics to a wee song called 'Frisbee' on the 'What Bird is That" CD, sort-of example of their style if can visualise it with jangily guitars and a cute male voice...

Today the sun is shining and I feel a million dollars
And I don’t need reminding that I own eleven cents
The winter of my discount tent when we first met each other
Became the summer of the seventeenth dole payment
And we became best friends

I can see through open doors
There’s someone sitting on the staircase
This house used to be yours
We used to turn it upside down
Now it’s the right way up and the grass is cut
But it’ll never quite be their place

I haven’t seen you for a while
You should come round
You should come round if you’re not too busy
Come round and we’ll throw the frisbee
Come round, tell me that you miss me

Can't tell you how much pleasure I get out of hearing a discussion about the Lucksmiths on Barbelith. They're a mob of local lads, they're a Fitzroy band (which won't mean much to people outside Melbourne), and I happen to think they're ace, too.

What Bird is That is a really strong album and so is Naturaliste. I'd also recommend Why that Doesn't Surprise Me and A Good Kind of Nervous.

And if I may brag for a second, I play clarinet on two songs on WBIT - I used to live with Mark, the bass-player, in a shitty terrace house in North Fitzroy, which is why the whole fact of this discussion tickles me personally.

Only thing about their o/s success that is a little miff-making is that I don't get to see them play so often anymore, and I don't get to hang with my boy Marky Monnone much anymore - last time I tried I was just in line with all the other welcome home wellwishers and fans, and he's an absolute bugger to actually catch up with one-on-one.

Music's fookin' ace, though.

Saw this show on monday and had a great time. Lucksmiths surprised me by sounding a lot like The Wedding Present. Much moreso than I would have thought based on their albums. They were definitely fun.

Marty guitarist would be happy to hear that - he's a big Weddoes fan from way back.

Thank you for letting me find out about that band! They are a good antidote to the new NIN album.

Lucksmiths reminds me of Belle and Sebastian and Gene. Leaping puppy is right, I can imagine all kinds of fluffy animals hopping merrily to this music.

And I just posted some infos and a link about their music on another board to spread the leaping.
