Hi there.

I'm getting all exited over Star Wars again as the commercial hype reaches it's crescendo, we've started playing the Star Wars d20 RPG, imagining that although Episode I & II were crapola number III will finally deliver the goods etc.

You may mock.

But anyhow: do you guys know if any of the Star Wars comics published are worth reading (I'm into Morrison's New X-men, The Invisibles, Promethea, that kind of stuff)?

And which would you recommend?

Also interested in reading good Star Wars fiction, if *such* a thing exists.

Reason I'm asking here is that I consider you folks discerning readers, and I can't be bothered to pick up a (completely) crappy SW-comic.

I'm not greatly interested in Star Wars, film or comic, but i did dip into the new Star Wars Tales collection at the bookshop where i work and it seemned pretty good. An 'indie' collection much like the DC book a year or two back which had indie comic creators tackling Superman and Batman etc. Here you've got people like Tony Millionare and Peter Bagge doing stories about Jar Jar Binks' Dad and an aging Luke Skywalker. Might be a good place to start.

We've had this topic before here and here.

Dark Horse used to be reknowned for producing high-quality licenced comics then some time around the late ninties the quality dropped - I ended up reading a load of Pre-prequal Star Wars comics for research purposes a few years back and was surprized how bad some of them were. While I have heard of some really fun and high-quality coming out of Dark Horse in recent years (pete bagge on Star Wars!), its still those dull comics are still the first thing I remember when i think of recent Star Wars comics...

I always thought the old Tales Of The Jedi comics were the best of the line. They had the advantage of taking place centuries before the movies, so there was no reason to (over-)use familiar characters.

Star Wars: Republic and the series of SW: Jedi one-shots are excellent. far and away the best Expanded Universe (EU) material and just solid comics all around.

SW: R used to just be Star Wars, and it was more hit-or-miss there, but basically anything written by Ostrander is the shit. you should pick up the following trade paperbacks first:

Twilight
Darkness
Rite of Passage

these three set up the major characters of the Prequel Era comics (Quinlan Vos, Aayla Secura, Tholme, the Anzati, Sheyf Tinte, etc) and lay down backstory for the epic of the Clone Wars.

once you've read those, move on to the Clone Wars series, which collects the Republic and Jedi issues from the CW timeframe. not to be confused with Clone Wars Adventures, which is based on the animated microseries).

basically, the Prequel Era is excellent for EU materials, even though the movies suck. the Classic Era and afterwards are kind of dull in the EU, even though the movies are better.

also, Stark Hyperspace War is pretty good, as is Jango Fett: Open Seasons (which tells Jango's backstory and covers his recruitment by Dooku).

as far as novels go, look for anything by James Luceno, Troy Denning, or Matthew Stover (though Traitor won't make much sense unless you've got a good understanding of the NJO time period). Aaron Allston's Wraith Squadron series is pretty good, too, in a goofy sort of way.

I read the first Star Wars Eternities (I think it was called) one- that was quite good. More "interesting" than "good", actually, but worth checking out, It's like an alternate version of ANH, where things happen completely differently. Kind of a SW "What If?"

As I say, technically it wasn't that great, but it was a lot of fun.

A long time ago I used to get the Star Wars Weekly comic from Marvel UK ( reprinted classic star wars stories by Carmine Infantino, Archie Goodwin, Jo Duffy and Cynithia Martin ) with another backup strip eg Power Pack ...

As far as I am concerned these were classic star wars stories but that may just be down to nostalgia..

Dark Horse have collected them in their Classic Star Wars : A Long Time Ago TPBs
http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/profile.php?sku=11-758

read most of them from the library ( good place to get TPB's !! )

PS Whatever happened to Cynthia Martin ? her artwork on the later Star Wars stories was absolutely gorgeous...
