Wondering what people's various interpretations of Spare's terms ZOS and KIA are. I've heard a few. Topic for open discussion.

I always believed from reading Spare's stuff that ZOS refers to his magical self, i.e his state of mind when working.
And KIA though discussions with one chaote I know it is everything else, in particular it is essentially Chaos.

What I thought of it was pretty much the same, KIA is everything, and the ZOS was the self.

My take so far is that Kia is Distinctionless Consciousness or Conscious Unity. My take on Zos is that it was the self, this self, in a way that included the Body some way. I am currently rereading The book of pleasure so I my post of a revised definition or two later.

So ZOS is like Jiva and KIA is like Atman from Hindu metaphysics?

While we're on the topic, has anyone tried that "pottery virgin" thing that Spare invented?

IIRC wasn't one of Spares terms the Self (Zos) and the Non Self (Kia). This Self/Non Self duality is important particulaly in relation to Spare's Neither - Neither system. I think it's also a form of Buddist mantra (Black not Black, White not White etc.) but I don't know enough about Buddism to comment further.
As to the pottery virgin I have never tried it, nor had any desire to. I have an overiding image of someone wanking into an ashtray.

THE Zos/Kia, Self/Not-Self duality reminds me of the Terrance McKenna Self/Other duality, does anyone know if McKenna was familiar with A.O. Spare's works?

I really enjoyed the Logomarchy of Zos. In between Spare's philosophical raps you get pearls of wisdom like "I desire sexual congress with a large-bottomed woman". He definetly was one of the more colorful old-school magicians.

"102. ALL PLEASURES eventually equalize; their difference is of duration and degree. When certain pleasures are constant we naturally strive for their preservation. Hence to me a 'large fat woman's bottom' is spacious and spatial- I know nothing better- so why should I disavow or transfer to 'Love of God', or anything else? I am loving God via a fat arse."

There aren't a heck of a lot of books on Spare but the most lavish one I've encountered is "Zos Speaks! Encounters with Austin Osman Spare". It's perhaps one of the nicest occult books I've had the pleasure of reading, and I found mine for only $80 in brand new condition. Not only does it contain a myriad of Spare's artwork (including a full-color section) you also get Spare's grimoire "The Book of Zos Vel Thanatos" and, equally fascinating, correspondance and diary extracts between Austin Spare and Kenneth Grant during the years 1949-1956. Some of those letters are downright fascinating...

A second vote for 'Zos Speaks' in the UK you can get it for about £45 from somehere like Atlantis. Also good are IHO Spare books particulaly Ethos which features Spare's masterpiece 'The Book of Pleasure'
