Interview with a Water Elemental

Session 1

I went to the lake in my backyard and sat by it, talked to it, and offered it some bread. (i.e. feeding the fish and ducks that live in the lake). Nothing really happened until later that night, right before I fell asleep. It was pouring rain outside and I was focusing on the rain and it was making me really sleepy when all of a sudden the water elemental appeared to me. (Not in any physical sense... kinda like a waking dream but it was very vivid.) And the thing that impressed me the most was that he appeared in the form of a superhero I created (and used to draw constantly) as a kid. The hero was called The Wave, and he had water based powers. I hadn’t thought of the guy in years!

Impulsivelad: Are you the water elemental?

The Wave: Yes.

Imp: Why do you look like The Wave? I haven’t thought about that character since I was 10.

Wave: It’s the way you think. Look at your web site, it’s populated with Gods, Spirits, and all manner of powerful entities dressed as Superheroes. This was simply the best way to come to you. Like water I am formless and take the shape of my vessel. I’ve appeared as, sprites, virgins, and dragons.

Imp: Now that you’re here, I don’t know what to say or ask. I wasn’t prepared for this.

Wave: You summoned me to see if you can. You’ve become impotent in the arts and you seek stimulation.

Imp: I wouldn’t have put it that way, but yeah.

Wave: Your magical studies have led you to a dead end. You’ve learned that the Universe is a solid structure and so you’ve resigned to it, but the Universe is not exactly solid, it is fluid. The future, although it flows in one direction, undulates with possibility. So too does the past, as we speak it is swelling and sinking, it is not fixed but fluid. I can flow upstream and introduce myself as the character Wave and I can flow farther and introduce myself as an actual wave.

Imp: When I was 4 I was at the beach just chilling on an inner tube and a huge wave crashed down on me and flipped me over. I was terrified.

Wave: Hello.

Imp: What an asshole.

Wave: (a laugh like someone gargling with water.)

I fell asleep.

I'll post Session 2 in a day or two.

Excellent, Imp. Very cool to see a full transcript of what you recall in your contact here...

I know there was more to it but that's all I really remember. The rain was really knocking me out.

Thanks for this - I love reading actual reports of workings.

That half-awake / half-asleep moment just before sleep is one that I've had contacts in, too. I know exactly what you mean by "vivid" - the drag being that you always fade into actual sleep and therefore the ending is never too clear.

Session 2

I spent a day at my parent’s house looking though my old room for one of my drawings of Wave. I needed to strengthen the connection with Wave (or the Water Elemental) since the last contact kinda fade at the end. I needed something to focus on so I wouldn’t fall asleep again. Anyway, I couldn’t any pictures so I asked Finderwolf to do some sketches for me. Then I went back to the lake with more bread and offered it up. I talked to the water. It was windy that day and I noticed that the shimmering. If wave was right, the universe must look like this. Later that night, Wave appeared again in that half asleep/half awake state, still not a physical manifestation but I think I’m asking for too much. It was real enough, like when you hear the phone ring, get out of bed, and realize the phone really hadn’t rung.

Impulsivelad: You’re back? You know, I didn’t think you were coming back since these things usually never work twice in a row with me.

The Wave: You still need help.

Imp: Last time you were saying that the Universe is fluid. I can understand that on an intellectual level, but I really want to get it.

Wave: You will eventually, the stiff Universe model you’ve developed is new to you. It’ll pass. Start thinking of the Universe as a vast ocean, the image you got while sitting by the lake is an accurate one.

Imp: Okay but the thing I’m having trouble with is if the Universe is a vast ocean I’m still just like plankton in it. I can’t see me affecting any change.

Wave: Although the currents carry you in a wider sense, your attempts to swim, however feeble, create ripples that span large areas of Spacetime. The ripples do not engulf the ocean but they engulf the small region that contains your life and that is all that matters.

Imp: That actually makes sense. I read this thing once about M Theory, were the universe is a membrane or something. It’s kinda like that, right?

Wave: Don’t complicate yourself.

Imp: Alright...

I remember I was going to say something at this point but with his last sentence I felt myself falling asleep again.

Then the next day I notice these two posts on one of my threads that pretty much echo what Wave said:

Finderwolf- I feel that when we take this approach, we just leave ourselves to be carried along by the current, whereas when you engage in magick and self-directed will/goals/whatever, you are not just being carried along with the eddies and currents but carving out your own path. It's like the difference between swimming passionately forward in the sea or just being carried along on the current.

Z. deScathach - Ultimately, we swim in the universe like fish, and the water within us is the same substance as the water of the ocean in which we swim.

More later.

Finderwolf quickly sketched The Wave for me to help with this experiment and with only minor description get got it perfectly. Thanks, man.

Using a Hado technique that I adapted from Strix’s link, I placed this pic of Wave in a bowl of water, meditated, and talked to it. After about an hour I went to take a nap (because these things seem to work when I’m in a half waking state) and I had another small conversation with the Water Elemental (after a few days of nothing).

The Wave: I join the divine ranks on your website. (More laughter like gurgling.)

Imp: Not really, I just need to host your pic so I can post it on Barbelith.

Wave: I know. (Still amused… I think.) This new method you’ve employed to summon me works well.

Imp: It’s a little bit Hado and a little bit water scrying. Still, I was hoping to get a better result.

Wave: Better? I am here.

Imp: I know, but this is kinda like a dream and I wanted to see something more “magical”. Something while I was fully awake.

Wave: You are not that disciplined. Your mind bubbles. You become anxious. The shores of sleep are the best state for you to explore the Magical. About this method, it worked well because water is a powerful channel to the spirit world.

Imp: Like in Constantine?

Wave: (Sloshing laughter. He seems to be in a good mood today.) Notice that your most effective sigils have been cast in water, they naturally wash out from your mind to the Universal-Sea. (I’m not going to elaborate.) I believe this new understanding will help you.

Imp: Well, I’ve been doing better in my magical practice. I think I’ve got my mojo back.

Wave: You that have launched a thousand sigils, were worried about your magic? Just because you became lax in your practice does not mean that your Will had suffered.

I became too awake at this point to maintain a connection. I tried refocusing but it wouldn’t come.

thats a cool pic. I hope I don't offend Wave by equating it with Fire but it looks like a cross between Firestorm, and electro Supes from a few years back

I love that emblem as well

on a comics note and not totally un-related, I have just bought twenty or so issues of Swamp Thing by Alan Moore (they are Vertigo reprints)and intend to read them when I go to bed tonight. I believe (haven't got to that bit yet) that Moore made Swamp Thing into an Earth elemental

anyway, thanks again for sharing your experiences

I might just do that

I will do the lottery daily play game over here tomorrow (£30,000 top prize........not enough to get me what I want but nice for now!)

The Wave actually reminds me a little of the Scott McDaniel-drawn Stan Lee rendition of Aquaman from the Just Imagine mishegahs he did with DC a couple years ago. Everyone sing to the tune of the Osmonds:

I'm a little bit Hydro-Man
I'm a little bit Electro-Supes...

Mind, I think your version looks better than all of the above.

Imp, if I again manage to get myself into a state where I have some sort of visitation with my rendition of the water elemental that I mentioned in the thread that birthed this one, I'll test the waters (hur hur) by seeing if it can transmit a message to you. Or is it questionable to think that my water elemental is somehow linked to yours?

From what he's said to me I assume that there is only one Water Elemental on Earth (possibly the whole Universe) and it takes different forms to communicate with humans and then flows back into the greater entity. (i.e. like rain drops falling into the ocean.)

Wave- Like water I am formless and take the shape of my vessel. I’ve appeared as, sprites, virgins, and dragons.

So yeah, try to send a message. Also here's another (less serious) pic of The Wave.

Glad to hear your contact continues to go well, Imp -- using the whole 'put a word / thing / image in water thing' based off that guy's studies was a great idea.

When I did the second pic I wanted to give more of a sense that riding the waves of the Universe is FUN and that our friend the water elemental has a gleam in "his" eye as "he" shows us the ropes of reality and how it works. (He does have a slight smile in the first pic, sort of a knowing grin, even though it might be hard to see.)

What rendition was that?

hold on, got it - this is, reproduced for everyone for water elemental topic clarity , what you wrote in the thread that gave birth to this one. And now I see that your manfiestation wasn't so much visual as audio...

>> This talk of water elementals is interesting to me, since the medium through which I seem to get my clearest signals is water. Could have something to do with my fishy sign. Of course, my most meditative (and, ahem, employing a common gnostic tactic, koffkoffspankitkoff) time of day is in the shower. One time I had something like a three-way conversation between my more anemic shell personality, my more aggressive (and damn remonstrative) repressed ficsuit persona, and then suddenly a calm, caring, mediating voice that seemed to emerge from the water. I've asked that voice to cleanse me of illnesses I've feared I've had, and symptoms have seemed to have disappeared, at least for a time. (Pretty much all the entities that I've had any sort of contact with come in the form of voices that, on a mundane level, I know I am producing, but at the same time they are not my voice.) As I am completely unfocused, however, these contacts have been few and far between, and seem to happen completely beyond my conscious ability to summon them up.

>> The nearest major body of water to where I live is the East River. I've done workings in the middle of it, both on Roosevelt Island and the Staten Island Ferry, but it's sometimes hard for me to judge the efficacy of these workings since they themselves start with specific aims that I garble and cast out onto the world. (I wonder, because of the specific nature of the medium in which I do these workings, as well as the entities' predominant manifestation in voice, whether a wind elemental is more appropriate, though at least for the former a water metaphor is also somewhat apt.) I fear my lack of knowledge in these matters impedes my ability to effect my will, which tends not to be terribly compelling to begin with.

Okay, the past few days I’ve been going out to the lake and communing with it. Talking to it, feeding the fish, tadpoles, birds... the whole deal. Today though a got quite the scare when a large shadow crept from out of the water. It was frog or actually it was two frogs having sex. One was holding on to the other one piggy-back style, while the one at the bottom came up from the water and stood right before me. For some strange reason I immediately thought this was a message from the Water Elemental. I did a search on the symbolism of frogs and got this:

In many cultures frogs are linked to the element in which they reside: water. In myths they figure as bringers of rain or thunder, calling the water down with their croaking. In the Vedas, the croaking of frogs is said to be a thanksgiving to Heaven for the fertilizing Spring rains. In Vietnam the toad was called the 'sky-god's uncle' who told the sky-god when to pour out the water. The person who harmed a toad would be struck by lightning. In the Celtic tradition, each stream and spring had its own spirit, and frogs were considered the messengers of these water spirits. Because of its connection to rain and water, the frog was also associated with the cleansing and healing powers of water. In Ancient China however, toads were a symbol of longevity, and they were associated with Liu Hai, the God of wealth. The goddess of the Moon was also depicted as a toad.
Frogs were not symbols of death but, on the contrary, of rebirth and renewal, because of its remarkable metamorphosis of egg into tadpole and from tadpole into frog. The Egyptian goddess Heket was depicted as a frog or a frog-headed woman. She was a patron of childbirth and one of the midwives who assisted at the birth of the Sun.

All that’s pretty general but the fact that the frogs were shagging is important I think. So what do you guys think the Water Elemental was trying to tell me?

Possibly simply that it's spring? Is it possible that your just noticing the cycles of nature around the habitat you've chose to relate to?

I'm not being facetious btw, increased awareness of natural cycles is exactly the sort of thing I'd be looking for if I was working outdoors.

Bear in mind, I know nothing about the mating cycles of frogs and have I've no idea if our little green friends are at it it once, twice or many times a year.

(Hint: Do a google on "finding your way in the woods")

I guess what I was saying is "don't be so quick to impose symbolism on nature". Seeing animals reproducing in the wild would be plenty magical enough for me.

And you could answer the question about frog-shagging by simply observing for a year, which would be an excellent way of deepening your relationship.

From what I recall of my rural youth, this is kinda shagging-frog season. You'll probably see them at it for a couple of months to come.

Frogs return to their spawning grounds year on year. Keep an eye out for frogs trying to cross roads and give them a hand. They're not good at road safety, frogs. Many get smooshed. Your sloshy new chum may give you Brownie points for frog-helping.

I figured it had something to do with Spring only I’d never seen it before and Miami really doesn’t have any seasons… it’s either summer or summer here. There’s always tadpoles in the water (year round) so I think the frogs shag pretty regularly here. I don’t know. Thanks for the input, guys.

Anything new with the water elemental? I was going through some stuff and came across the drawings I did for Imp's working...got me thinking about The Wave again. A little voice told me to resurrect this thread, for reasons unbeknownst to me at the moment.
