Why don't I like Basement Jaxx?

It's odd, the only track of their's that I like is 'Where's Your Head At?' which is probably because they sound like they're doing a Chemical Brothers. But they completely fail to move me, though the video for 'Rendez Vu' is a thing of beauty...

My theory is that you are a terrible person and must be destroyed at once. Actually, I understand, I'm not particularly fond of them. Look for some of their remixes of other people, they tend to be best when not being forced to create on their own.

I also only like 'Where's Your Head At'

It's because, growing up, they loved Luther Vandross more than they did The Jesus And Mary Chain.

Those South London, Bacardi Breezer ad, wannabe jazz funkateers.

Our Low-Fat Lady, I charge that thou should not only cease wondering why you don't like Basement Jaxx, I charge also that thou should not give a shit what anyone else thinks about thee not liking them.

I've been doing that with Nirvana for years, and it never did me any harm.

Exactly. That song where Cobain is screaming "Entertain Us" is only half-decent under the influence of 5 V+Rs and the presence of a hundred other eighteen year aulds.

As good as "Where's Your Head At?" is, it's even better mashed-up with The Hives' "Hate To Say I Told You So." They work so perfectly together.

I enjoy BJ (snicker) when I hear them, but like so many other things I'd either enjoy or get sick of if exposed to more regularly I don't seek them out, so I am unfit to speak on their more specific merits.

Why would you expect to like them? They're not really in line with the majority of your music taste, are they? I mean, to the best of my knowledge and without any snark, you don't really like much in the way of contemporary r&b, or hip hop, or UK garage, do you? So you like the rocky one, there's not necessarily any harm in that, you might like 'Cish Cash' from Kish Kash but not a lot else from that album. You're probably confused by the fact that Basement Jaxx have occasionally been presented as being more or less along the same lines as the Chemical Brothers, or Orbital, or Underworld, but there are a few differences (especially on the last album) that might make all the difference, depending on the kind of music you like.

Speaking of which, Music forum, surely?

well they're the gap-year mobile-disco aren't they? want some beery bigbeat with a latin twist? check! beery bigbeat with that goa vibe? chik-check! can't dance? no-one can dance at our discos, we're from fucking exeter or somewhere!

you don't like fatboy slim, so why would you like basement jacksy? there's no mystery here.

Gumbit, have you heard Kish Kash? And if so, do you really think "beery bigbeat" is an accurate and satisfactory description of 'Lucky Star', 'Right Here's The Spot', 'Plug It In', 'Hot & Cold', or 'If I Ever Recover'?

why should i do that ? i've heard their singles, and they're all shit. you know the one with the handing-out-free-cokes-advert-girl tell me tell me so totally deluded? the trisha's encounter-group lyrics in that one really remind me of someone.

Er, I really can't follow that...

Basement Jaxx are odd 'cause I'm not particularly keen and I don't really see why anyone would be, but a number of people I know and respect - people with musical taste similar to my own - think they're great.

I mean, I *hate* Where's Your Head?, I think it's utter shit, but apparently I'm missing a great party tune.

What's the appeal, Petey?

Well I'm not sure I can explain 'Where's Your Head At?' as it's not one of my favourite Jaxx songs - "beery bigbeat" isn't too bad a description of that one - and it doesn't have all that much in common with the stuff I like best, which is what I was trying to get at. Maybe have a gander at a previous thread in which I gush about Kish Kash but some other people get a word in as well.

In case anyone cares, the vocalist on the studio version of 'Good Luck' isn't the girl from the Coca-Cola advert (although I understand she may sing the vocal when they tour), it's the lead singer from The Bellrays.

Well, I thought the thread was too silly for the Music forum, but hey... I think Petey Shaftoe has got a point there, it seems I thought they were dance like the Chems, and Petey is saying they aren't. Really? I always thought that was what they were doing and it was leaving me cold.

they're the gap-year mobile-disco aren't they?

Actually, no they're not. They've been patchy on occasion, but the Jaxx have also put out some of the most interesting and fun dance music of the last eleven years. Their best work covers both poppy stuff (as on their last two albums) and club tracks (various white labels, remixes and b-sides). If your only exposure has been the tunes that get overplayed at the gap-year mobile-disco than you've missed out on a sizable chunk of what they do best.

Recs: 'Fly Life (Brixton Radio Mix)', 'All U Crazies', 'Span Trak', 'Bongoloid', 'My Name Iz Start', Jaxx remixes of 'Rockin Down The House', Dem 2 remix of 'Jump'n'Shout'. The bonus disc of their forthcoming singles compilation should have a few of these on there.

I'm no fan of Jaxx on CD but live their one of the best party bands I've ever seen.

Not really, no. There's a variety and willingness to experiment there that yr Chemical Brothers and the like refuse to go anywhere near. There's also a punchy brightness, a lightness of touch to the best of their stuff, whereas those that Petey mentions in comparison - Chems, Underworld - have a habit of making everything they touch turn into a bit of a plodding dirge, sort of like Oasis with a different instrument set. Which is pretty much what I think Where's Your Head At is, tbh. Cannot abide that track.

My opinion on them hasn't really changed since that last thread - half of Remedy is fantastic, half dull, Rooty is pretty great bar a couple of major duffers, and the best tracks off Kish Kash still have a habit of sounding exciting for the first minute or so, before they start to feel overfamiliar and oppressive. There's not really anything on that one for me, I'm afraid. They seem to me to be a great band in desperate need of some quality control.

As for why you don't like them, well, I don't know. I'm not sure it's something that particularly *matters* though, in the grand scheme of things.

I love Rooty, especially Just One Kiss. I have no idea why I specifically like that song, it just makes me jump up and down with mad joy. I went to see them about three years ago and they were wonderful live but not supremely better than on record. I think they're one of the few bands that keeps a distinct sound that doesn't lose it's flair when recorded. They are wilder live and I think a good audience probably adds to their act in a very interactive way (I don't think this is necessarily true for all groups- more true for a particular type of dance act maybe).

They are powerful live, they've got that 'voodoo' thing going on - The last time I saw them, apart from on telly, it felt like somebody was walking over my grave.

I would recommend the new Basement Jaxx single, 'Oh My Gosh', to anybody (well, anybody who didn't have major hang-ups about music being fun and sexy). Amazing vocals courtesy of a woman called Vula Malinga. Music turns into 'Like I Love You' near the end. Great stuff.

Well, remember that I did originally put this in the Conversation, as it was more of an idle thought than a serious life and death thing...
