*waits for Haus to arrive*

He already has. (see above)

I would be happy with just one million so I didn't have to work thirteen hours of every fucking day, including weekends.
I hear ya Grant, I hear ya.

He already has. (see above)

I'm aware of that - but since then, you've outdone yourself.

FinderWolf
18:29 / 07.03.05
I have to say, on a mundane note, every time I hear Grant talk about how he works so hard all the time, it ruins my image of him as this upper-middle-class successful writer who can take lots of time off whenever he wants. Didn't he say that during the writing of The Invisibles he was traveling all over the place and taking a lot of time off here and there? You'd think he makes good money off all the residuals from his books, esp. off Arkham Asylum and stuff like that.

I guess I'm surprised to hear that he doesn't have less of a workload. Then again, he's probably chosen to take on these big projects...but I wonder if it's a question of "If I don't write all this tons of stuff, I can't pay my bills?" esp. with his DC exclusive contract and all...plus his corporate consulting work.

18:48 / 07.03.05
He should churn out some more scripts, he'd have all the time in the world on his hands then. I loved all that travelling and having the time of his life (facial infections aside) while writting Invisibles stuff, it inspired me. Now I feel like I'll never wander the land like Grasshopper, writting stuff, not like Grasshopper.

Is George M less cool than he used to be, though ?

Lately I can't feel but a bit reminded by Lou Reed's solo material. It's not that bad yet, but it's in the post, I fearfully dread.

Ganesh: Is there any point? Finderwolf participated at length in this thread, which discussed the idea of political correctness at some length, and said himself:

(and there seem to be many different and even contradictory definitions of PC)

and subsequently:

I would argue that "PC" is less about some wacked out, by the book ideology and more a synonym (in western society 2003, at least) for "racist/prejudice/not cool in this day and age because of sensitivity issues."

and has subsequently forgotten every single word of it.

So, what about that Identity Crisis, eh?

Haus - you need to mellow out, dude. Everyone needs to y'know, just chill. Apparently the new Lemon Jelly is very good !

More generally, I think Cameron, Finderwolf and, inasmuch as he can be said to be thinking anything, Hector are not quite getting it. I don't think anyone is not understanding what "I didn't enjoy my all-boys school because I wasn't gay" means. I don't think we needed that explaining. Just as we got what "Schizophrenics can't process metaphor" meant - that he wished everyone got Seaguy. We just understand that textual analysis can be applied not only to Hello! trivia like "How much does George earn?" or "Just how lovely is George's lovely and exclusive home?". It was not that we didn't understand what he wanted to say. We were moving on from there to look at what he actually said and how he said it. This is not a wildly controversial suggestion outside the worlds of comic books and possibly Fame Academy.

the thirteen hours a day thing - isn't compulsive writing pretty common in people with a tendency to temporal lobe jumpiness? there's lotso jobs provide a reasonable standard of living without all the overtime.

i reckon going to a boy's school would've been right rubbish. blokes are twats.

I respectfully disagree with Haus - not taking the bait. See my simple comment earlier in this thread. I don't think am misguided, clueless, prejudiced for my statement in this case. Haus may think whatever he/she likes. I know Haus believes we are missing some subtle (or not so subtle) horrible prejudice here in Grant's statement and we are misguided racists or whatever, but I believe this is a case where Haus is looking for something that isn't truly there.

And Haus, you can only beat the IC horse so much, esp. since I recanted multiple times my earlier statements about that book and laughed at myself many, many a time afterwards about it.

FinderWolf
14:01 / 08.03.05
I would add that in this statement...

>> The idea that you have a better time at an all-boys school if you are gay is, of course, tendentious, but then it assumes that you have to be gay to have had sex with other boys at school, which seems a bit of a reach.

I just feel that Haus is taking Grant's statement a little too seriously and a little too literally. 'Taking the piss' does hold as true and valid for some statements, despite how much we might feel tempted to be all up in arms and outraged about them, and is not always an easy out for lazy, uncritical, complacent minds, as Haus seems to be implying here. The distinction between when is joking around offensive and when is it not offensive but merely joking around is one that will be debated regarding potentially sensitive topics for decades to come.

I have to agree, and, besides, didn't your praise come before it became apparent that IC was, in fact, a rape epic?

Oh, your enthusiasm is endearing. You just constantly get the wrong idea. For example:

I know Haus believes we are missing some subtle (or not so subtle) horrible prejudice here in Grant's statement and we are misguided racists or whatever

Nope. I just think you're a fanboy, and you believe that if you are nice enough about George he will come round your house and have tea with you. It's something that happens a lot with comics and daytime television and fairly infrequently elsewhere. I, conversely, respect George both as a lover and as a human being and believe that if he says something a bit silly he is going to be emotionally mature enough to deal with people pointing it out. You don't grant (ahem) him that privilege, because you are intent on infantilising him in some sort of Grantpanzee's tea party where he relies on you to defend him from the big, bad world of other people's thinking. It's a bit sinister, but I daresay he's used to it. We will no doubt have a laugh about it over a steaming mug of horlicks.

ONLY NICE THINGS
22:39 / 08.03.05
However, George must be protected.

Alex's Grandma
02:44 / 09.03.05
Ah yes, that old thread.

I can't easily put into words just how much it hurt ( and not in that 'good' way,) to find out that George was seeing other people like that. But given that he's now a married man, I suppose he does have to be a bit circumspect, and if the occasion demands positively aversive, with regard to his other lovers, just in case 'the devil woman' suspects anything.

Or so I like to think. I only seem to see him every other Tuesday these days, and only then for, like, half an hour. At lunchtime, yet.

He's busy with work, he says.

FinderWolf
12:46 / 09.03.05
Thanks for clarifying, Haus. I don't feel that I'm letting Grant get away with saying something bad in this instance (after all, if I so slavishly worshipped him and wanted him to come to my house for tea I wouldn't have stated my concerns about some arguably vague storytelling of his in several recent instances, but I'm sure Haus will find a way to twist that around somehow as well, as always).

I realize now more than ever there is no point in arguing with Haus, however rational I attempt to be or however much of a sense of humor I have regarding the discussions, because Haus will always turn my point of view around to fit and justify Haus' needs. And I imagine Haus finds me guilty of the same thing. C'est la vie. I trust that I challenge myself on issues whether some person named Haus out there believes that I have independent thought or not, and I will forgive Haus no matter how insulting Haus is to my or others' intelligence.

To me, insulting other people's intelligence is worse than being 'a fanboy.' Even when I've disagreed with people on this board, I've always tried to be respectful about it rather than say "oh wow, you are all mindless fuckwits and if only you could be shaken into seeing the light, ah well, you're hopeless sheep and I'm clearly brilliant."

This is my final word on Haus-related matters unless I choose to sportingly engage in such debate again, with as much good humor and respectful debate as I can muster. I feel Haus goes beyond the issues to ad hominem attacks and I'm not real crazy about it. But of course, Haus thinks I'm just a mindless whining fanboy who doesn't like it when his fragile worldview is challenged. I agree to disagree strongly in this. I don't take kindly to people telling me what I REALLY think when I feel I've made myself clear.

Aertho
14:10 / 09.03.05
Oh Finder. Insulting peoples' intelligence is just Haus's schtick.

I still like you, and so does Haus. He says so himself. Haus is just a brain in a jar with a clenched fist and a rabid pitbull, so you can understand his position. Also: Haus posts like nuclear winter. If you see him coming, duck in a bunker, let the fallout wash away, and come out a day later to help the flowers grow.

FinderWolf
14:41 / 09.03.05
Well said, Chad - and I would remind myself not to take this debate too seriously either. Clearly Haus secretly admires me and wants me to come to his place for tea After all, anyone who remebers and re-posts my one-off comment about someone's speculation that Marvel might revive the obscure Gargoyle character must be a fan...

ONLY NICE THINGS

Finderwolf, he said with near-psychotic indulgence, if you don’t want people to insult your intelligence, and frankly after having on occasion to be told which forum you are posting in I’m astonished you are not more appreciative of how infrequently it has happened, then start by showing some. Intelligence is from the Latin intelligere - to understand. Read what other people write. Then try to understand it. So far you have repeatedly stated what you believe I have said, without at any point actually showing any evidence that you have done more then skim for keywords in what I have actually said. I find this disrespectful and insulting, and it suggests either that you are not interested in understanding or not able to understand your interlocutors, adding an enormous drag factor to any discussion you choose to enmire.

Did I say you were letting George get away with “saying something bad”? I did not. I said that you were infantilising George by refusing to accept that it was possible that he could cope with being in any way accountable for saying something silly - that you demand for him the right to “take the piss”, but deny it to anyone else in case it hurts what you appear to believe are George’s paper-thin feelings, be that about his wedding or his tendency to say somewhat titheaded things in interviews. I never mentioned your fragile worldview. I said that you credited George with such fragility that he needed to be protected from any possible challenge. And, most of all, I am not saying “you are all mindless fuckwits” or “you are all mindless sheep”. I despise that approach to argument and to people. I am saying that you, you specifically, Finderwolf, not everyone, not the mass, but you have a relationship to comprehension so frosty as to make Morrissey and Marr look like Hope and Crosby.

How, for example, does the response:

Nope

to the statement

I know Haus believes we are missing some subtle (or not so subtle) horrible prejudice here in Grant's statement and we are misguided racists or whatever

Then invite the unexamined restatement:

I don't feel that I'm letting Grant get away with saying something bad in this instance

Followed, hilariously, by:

. I don't take kindly to people telling me what I REALLY think when I feel I've made myself clear.

My. heart. bleeds.

Are you on dog crack?

You have no idea how much pain this apparent hatred of meaning causes me. It almost makes me regret the love I feel for your lop-eared, railing-adjacent enthusiasm.

After all, anyone who remebers and re-posts my one-off comment about someone's speculation that Marvel might revive the obscure Gargoyle character must be a fan...

I think that even someone mostly devoid of talent could do a decent story with that character....he's the only senior citizen in the Marvel Universe that has stayed his age...unlike Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, Captain America and so on.

"I don't want to fight the Red Skull, there are loud teenagers outside his building sagging their pants and listening to the hippity hoppity music. Why, in MY day the villains made their headquarters in deserted parts of the city so we didn't have to listen to the loud scary music the teenagers play."

The magic's back!

Aye, but look at where it came from. Many suspect a distress signal was sent to Gert Manque regarding the state of the board, whereby he willingly stated something he would never ever ever in a million years say just to piss Haus off.

That's a archimage, charmer, conjurer, conjuror, diabolist, diviner, enchanter, enchantress, exorciser, exorcist, fortune-teller, genie, genius, illusionist, marvel, medicine man, medium, miracle worker, necromancer, prophet, satanist, seer, shaman, siren, soothsayer, sorcerer, spellbinder, thaumaturge, theurgist, trickster, virtuoso, voodoo, warlock, witch, witch doctor, wizard for you.
