Hey! I'm back- home from work now, had no idea of course that something had kicked off thanks to me. My first time kicking something off on Barbelith.
I realise the conversation has moved on and all, and I've enjoyed reading what happened after I went to work, but what I'll say is: I'm 39 years old and I've listened to loads of music in my life, and I don't like jazz. I grew up in a very music-loving family, in New Zealand where there is such a cool attitude to music, a great live and radio scene, I've not been underexposed.
It's just that this is the second time in the last week or so I've heard someone online appearing to assume that if someone didn't like jazz they just needed to listen to it properly, or be more understanding of where it's coming from, or whatever, or that they were ill-educated about it, and I just don't like that approach to discussing music. However, I've just recalled I did the same thing to a workmate recently when he said he didn't like country music. He said it in a patronising, "everyone hates country", rolling his eyes sort of way. Jazz has loads of hip cachet, and country doesn't, and all that. I did apologise when he got pissed off and I swear I will try not to do it again.
I do like Nina Simone, does that count? I like her better the less jazzy she's being though.
I also like some kinds of cheese. I used to hate all kinds of pasta but now I love it, so you never know, there may be hope for me. |
