Your state of mind when magic does its job.

Magic very often requires us to change our state of mind to practise it, for instance charging sigils.

What about when the magic succeeds. When the effects of a sigil or servitor manifest themselves, are you often in a different state of mind? What about other forms of magic?

Altered states allow us to become more aware, so we tend to notice things we normally wouldn't. However, when you work a lot with magic you become more sensitised to "odd" stuff, and will have a greater chance of noticing it even if you are not in some altered state.

I generally have a pretty good level of sensitivity, but if that's because I'm constantly slipping in between different states of mind, or because I've trained myself to notice these things, I'm not totally sure. It could be a combination of both factors.

I was reading an article in newsweek(so it must be true ),that said some people are more sensitive to messages from the unconscious, which includes awareness of subconscious thoughts. When these thoughts are part of a 'magickal' mental framework, then you are using your innate sensitivity, which (and there are some people who don't have this) helps to shape impressions of your surroundings through closer analysis and interpretation of abstractions, thanks to your experiences with trancending conscious thought and ego.I find sometimes my thoughts are so loud, that walking down the street is a barrage of mental noise. Its actually unconscious impressions flooding your ego, dependent as it is,on referencing itself on other people,or not,as the case may be.If you walk down the street ignoring those around you and shutting them out,you end up walking along in a kind of trance.Sometimes it feels like you can 'read' other people, and this is where coincidence and paranoia can get you into trouble.I usually only feel like this when I'm hungry or tired, and my mind gets noisier trying to tell me to rest and eat.Sometimes other stuff pops into my head, and this sounds like other peoples thoughts, but its really a mental schism of being over-analytical in the unconscious parts of the mind, sometimes it feels like you have a handle on reality, sometimes it feels like your own sense of self is under attack, which is,I think, what is referred in The Invisibles as 'meme cycling'.

Wyrd, what about something like communicating with Dabh? You mentioned once (I think) that you had spoken to him while awake. I've only seen him in my dreams 1.5 times, and never while awake. That's how he was designed, I know, so it's fine, but I'm just curious.

Yeah, I can slip into a state when I can access the likes of Damh quite easily (hopefully that doesn't sound as if I'm bragging or something, it's just the facts).

I would use this ability to "tune in" a great deal, which is why I refered to slipping in and out of different states. For a serious conversation I would probably at the least close my eyes, but I've done that kind of thing while walking down the street as well.

I'll tell you a story that happened to me years ago. At this point I'd been using shamanic techniques for a couple of years, and I had a posse of Guides/Allies, and was doing the journey thang regularly, was a member of a drumming circle, etc. etc. I imagined I had some of this lark figured out.

Then, one day while I was walking home from work, a bunch of Guides just showed up. And I don't mean that I could literally see them, just that I was aware of all of them standing behind me. They then told me that I could expect this kind of thing to happen in the future. They warned me that scheduling journeys/meditations every week leads to a certain tendancy to view them as "being over there", and you go to them to talk to them.

They made it distinctly clear to me that they are with me all the time, and they were going to be doing this kind of drive-by conversation in the future. Needless to say I was moderately freaked by all of this, thinking I'd passed clear into the looney zone. However, it is a good point to remember, we have a habit of compartmentalising things, of saying "this belongs to this space and time", etc., which are generally false separations to make ourselves feel more comfortable.

Of course, shamanically you are supposed to "walk between the worlds" and sometimes this means having a mental conversation with an Ally while riding the bus. In fact, I've had great and valuable conversations with the likes of those kinds of things while walking, it's very easy to slide into another state. The Buddhists have a whole school devoted to walking meditations.

Anyway, hopefully I've made some sense!

Walking meditations. I think I can do this. What is the school called?

You said you couldn't literally see them. Could you literally hear them?
