go to fanboyrampage.blogspot.com (something you should do every day really) and look at the comments: rj is not dying, taking a job writing comics or being hounded off the internet by mark waid, but having a baby and anticipating less time being spent as comicsssss #1 spoilie.

Corrected link, by the bye.

Relevant bit: Looks like there will be a very special and last Lying In The Gutters next week.

Rich will, no doubt, return at some point—doing some version of a rumor column, for a different website, and with a different title. Remember, Rich has been doing the rumor-monger thing online for many years, and he's moved around before.

Next week may indeed be the last Lying In The Gutters at ComicBookResources.com, but I’d bet good money that within three months he’s got a new column at Comicon or Newsarama.

Rich and his partner are indeed expecting a child. He mentioned to me a while back that he was thinking of giving up lying in the gutters when his child was born looks like that might well be the case...

I always enjoy Lying the Gutters (or back when it was All the Rage) and I'm sorry to see it go...

there is still the lamer equivalent (comics gossip and scandal), All the Rage, over at Silverbulletcomicbooks.com (I think that's their site name).

I could never see why Joe Q. hates Rich so much -- it's a comic rumor column. It never calls itself real journalism. The entertainment biz, any kind of entertainment, always has such columns. I say deal with it, Joe!

All The Rage isn't even a rumor column anymore, as it tends to just print comics previews and interviews. I know it makes me shallow as hell, but I LIKE a good gossip column. Done right, it can be snarky fun. And comics companies have always hated that sort of thing.

Back in the late 70's/early 80's cat yronwood (sp?) ran a story in her "fit to print" column about Marvel planning to replace their heroes with younger, "cooler" versions, and they were looking to shed most of their writers who had been with them before Shooter took over as Editor in Chief. It was denied by Marvel, and was even mocked in Jim Shooter's column at Marvel at the time...then Iron Man was replaced, the Captain America replacement story was bumped for a couple of years (he was to be replaced by a Native American character in issue #300 according to JM DeMatties, who was writing it at the time), and through the 80's, every major Marvel character was replaced at some point.

And I think Rich Johnson's work on showing how DC was trying to scuttle "The Authority" in the middle of its run was almost journalism.

Of course, I think Rich is a much better "Op Ed" writer than a gossip writer, and his recent editorial on V For Vendetta was a great peice of writing.

Four years later, it's for reals this time. What I said upthread still holds, though; RJ will land on his feet.

He's got a new website opening up next week, so I would imagine his gossip stuff will land there.

Or maybe he'll quit. His column hasn't really been worth reading for about a year or so now with VERY rare exceptions.
