Edwyn Collins seriously ill

Singer-songwriter / producer Edwyn's seriously ill in hospital with a brain haemhorrage. He's always been one of my fave artists and his seminal band Orange Juice were very influential for independent British music from the 80s onwards. My thoughts go to him and his wife Grace and wishing him a speedy recovery. Get well soon Ed!

That's really weird - I literally just read that item, and was on my way to post it up! Damn sad news - I really like his 'Gorgeous George' album. Speedy recoverage Edwyn...

Latest news from his wife Grace on edwyncollins.com is that "Edwyn had an emergency operation on Friday. He has come through it as well as can be hoped for and is continuing to fight. Thank you for all the loving thoughts. It means a lot. Grace".

all fingers and toes crossed

[ gratuitously mean-spirited Flyboy-esque cheap shot ] God, why couldn't it have been Roddy Frame? [ /gratuitously mean-spirited Flyboy-esque cheap shot ]

Did he do "Never Met A Girl Like You Before?". Because that's one of the toppest disturbing pop songs ever.

Fuck.

That's the chap. But don't stop there. His last three solo albums, Doctor Syntax, I'm Not Following You and Gorgeous George (which features Girl Like You) are all top platters.

And all the Orange Juice back catalogue is fab. A good compliation of the best of his solo and OJ stuff was released last year. Well worth getting. It's called "A Casual Introduction"

A Casual Introduction doesn't include the early Postcard Records stuff though, which most consider the most vital. It's certainly the stuff that (along with fellow Postcarders Josef K) provided a MASSIVE influence for those janglers of today, yer Franz's and yer Kaiser Chiefs et al.

A compliation of all the Orange Juice Postcard stuff (including the originally unreleased first album Ostrich Churchyard) was due out this May under the title "The Glasgow School". Whether it still will is of course now debatable.

The album 'Gorgeous George' also featured another absolutely ace song 'If you could love me' which, if anything, topped 'Girl Like You'. Wasn't a hit. AS lost classic if you will.
'Rip it Up' is a great Orange Juice song - all spiky guitar plucking and squelchy disco drumming, with Edwyn's trademark deep vocal..great stuff.

re Rip it Up - don't forget the awesome weird "quacking" bass riff.

Latest from Grace on Edwyn's site:

"I'm sorry I don't do this enough but I'm sure you understand. Edwyn is making progress although it is still early days. He is very tough. I'm able to tell him about this truly lovely outpouring of good wishes . It raises a smile. Keep thinking of him. With my love and gratitude, Grace."

Sounds promising.

I bloody hope he'll be able to play the guitar again. He's a seriously underrated guitar player, is our Edwyn.

C'mon laddy you can do it.

Listened to gorgeous George again last night. There are so many great songs on that record. The first track, "Campaign for real rock", is one of the most fantastically bile filled songs I've ever heard. A total anti-rockist (God, I hate that term) rant from beginning to end. You can practically hear the battery acid rising in his throat. Su-bloody-perb.

Three years later, Edwyn Collins is not only still alive, but playing live. The man's got stones.

And I take back every bad thing I've ever said about Roddy Frame.
