Do any of you have any recommendations for decent free music packages? Something I'll be able to download which I can use to rip music from CD and turn it into whatever the files are called that can be manipulated in the program.

And preferably something that's easy to use with a built-in tutorial. As you can probably tell, I know almost nothing about this stuff!

iTunes.

Best out there for ripping CDs...easy to use, easy to organize, and you can convert to 5 million formats (AIF, MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, etc.)

In terms of manipulating the files...what do you want to do with them? Their used to be a great free wave editor called Spark ME, but it's no longer available. Probably Audacity is your best bet.

I probably wasn't very clear. I want something I can use to compose music.

I dunno, then... Garageband for the Mac is pretty nice, but you gotta buy that for a modest fee...

never really used a free music composition app...

Audacity isn't great, but it is free, and it runs on any operating system you're likely to be using. We're using it to do the Wandering Song. It can open/save in most formats, though mp3s require a plugin. It doesn't do MIDI. But if you're looking to slice & dice pre-existing files, make mashes and the like, it should work for you.
