Help me pick a digital Camera

Hi! I've got a 4 year-old Canon digital elph that is far too limited for what I would like to do with it. I would like to buy a digital camera that is versatile - that I can use under a lot of different conditions and manually adjust settings, etc. like I would be able to with a bottom-of-the-line 35mm camera. I'm really not happy with the Elph - in anything less than bright daylight I have to shoot with the camera flash and it makes everything, particularly people, look awful.

I don't have a lot of money to spend, so no fancy professional models. Tell me about your camera or what you would buy if you had, oh, between 200-400 dollars to spend.

Get another Canon. Really. I've had several digicams and the best have easily been Canons.

None of the lower-level ones are really that hot in low light, but I've gotten decent enough results taking pictures of night-time city scenes with my old Powershot A-series without using flash, and I expect the new ones are better.

My Canon PowerShot A75 does wonderful pictures, so I recommend Canon, too. And use Photoshop to touch up the pictures. I´m always surprised, how great the pictures can turn out. Often they look much better, than what I saw at the time.

I got the girl an Olympus Camedia C-60 recently since it was well priced and had good features overall. It's a 6.1 megapixel CCD camera with manual controls (no manual focus though) and lots of features that are useful. It's a nice size and pretty sturdy. It also got high ratings in reviews and Consumer Reports. Retail is around $300, though you could find it for less.

It might not have the same feel of a 35mm or SLR bodied cam, but it's plenty good for all but professional use.
