I don't know DM, he doesn't look too bad in that picture, bearing in mind heis in his late sixties and has quaffed inordinate amounts of substances that are, so they say, pretty bad for you.

Mind you, my eyesight isn't very good and he's a way away from the camera. Jesus, I need to have a drink in his honour too, but I'm at work. Ah well, in the morning ...

DM-

The fuckers had to load up buses at nursing homes and cart the old folks to the polling booths to beat him. He had the good ol' boys shit-scared, needless to say.

An eyewitness account of HST's recent physical condition, or, Intimations of A Good Reason to Kill Yourself. Stop your mourning, he's fine now.

i'd wager good money that going out like Hemingway would've been something he'd have wanted, rather than colostomy bags and bedsores and the slow, miserable arrival of death. at least this way death was on his terms.

This is what has been going through my head throughout parts of the day, and I think that he could have chosen to take his life rather than going through all that crap. He wouldn't have wanted to give some people the pleasure of seeing him old and frail, and I think he could have done it for that reason.

I forgot to drink for him yesterday, having been up all night and then getting blown away by seeing this thread. I'm going to go downstairs now and drink through a bottle of wine or something that's in the cupboard as I have no beer, have a few rolls and think of the great man.

It's just a fuck. If there ever is something like a supercontext at some point in the future, man, Leary and Hunter should have been there with whoever else to greet the thing as it arrives.

Love and Peace to you HST, and thanks again for all of the laughs and the inspiration. I'll never forget you.

Maybe not suicide then, but seppuku.

I still plan to use this as an excuse to carry on a vendetta against Duke until the End of Time.

It's also good to imagine that whenever he passed, another young warrior/ess somewhere out there got handed the torch. Good luck dude/ess, and peace be with you if this is the case.

Had to larf - the Eveing Standar/Daily Mail had an articel today (weds) from (i think) an Allison SomeOneOrOther (sorry, don't have the paper), extolling 'Don't mourn this cheap, fucked hack...what a loser...Tom Wolfe is a shining example of superior prose/journalism...etc.

I thought of the 'lith, and retched.

RIP HST, I loved you and will for a long time, no doubt.

Well absolutely.

Anyone in mind ?

I'm thinking, seeing as Dr T is either up there in heaven or has ceased to exist ( 50/50 in personal cosmology, ) it might be worth discussing, who his successor might be.

Who, y'know, tells it like it is.

I wish I had the answers, but I don't.

I'm very angry.

For me it was mostly just a huge shock. The last few years he just seemed to be throwing off this inexplicable vibe of immortality. As though he were indestructible.

Whenever he made a TV appearance, he'd have this little smile that just screamed, "That's right, fuckers. The drugs didn't kill me, the booze didn't kill me, the government didn't kill me, and the SEVENTIES didn't kill me. I AM THE VISION OF MAN ASCENDANT! You're gonna be eating my words for a long time yet you miserable swine."

Mostly, I just don't believe he's really dead. I mean, I know he's dead; I just don't really believe it yet.

Update: apparently he shot himself whilst on the phone with his wife, and had been talking about doing it for some time.

Thompson Dies On Phone

Excerpt:

Anita Thompson, 32, said her husband had discussed killing himself in recent months and had been issuing verbal and written directives about what he wanted done with his body, his unpublished works and his assets.

His suicidal talk put a strain on their relationship, she said.

"He wanted to leave on top of his game. I wish I could have been more supportive of his decision," she said. "It was a problem for us."

No shit?

As a long standing Hunter S. Thompson fan I'd been planning on buying The Gonzo Tapes since I first heard they were going to be released. However, since it's over 50 quid (40 USD in America, I think) I decided to download it first, which isn't at all unusual for me, and certainly hasn't stopped me from buying a legitimate copy in the past.

Got to say that I'm very disappointed. Several hours of really tinny ramblings made on a few cheap tape recorders (I can't believe they spent a single penny on attempting to clean up the audio.) If, like me, you were planning on shelling out the money, I'd really advise against it. Terrible quality, and a pretty cheap attempt at cashing in on his fanbase.

Still have high hopes for the upcoming Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson film which arrives late this year.
