So, let's begin by setting up a nice little domain wherein there really is something to the whole 2012 deal. And end point of something, a start point of something else - and quite possibly one that bleeds backwards through time to where we're standing now. Certainly it feels like that from where I'm standing now, but I won't say for certain that we're not looking at another Y2K floptasm.

Regardless, let's take the Mayan Apocalypse as a given, and play.

I'm most interested in what people can derive using various systems (magical, mystical, mundane, mixed, whatever) about the times leading up to and where we are today by doing a bit of a reverse count from 2012 to now. Then seing where we get on that basis, if you get my drift.

For an example.

Tarot - if we place the final trump (the World) at 2012 that places us in the year of Temperance right now, with last year being the year of Death. That feels about right, all things considered. We can also look at the 0 point being 2012 and count back from the Fool in reverse order - which would make last year the year of Strengh and this one the year of the Chariot. Which instinctively doesn't jive as well with me, but I quite like it as a counterpoint to the forward counting.

In fact, I very much like looking at both the forward and the backward happening at the same time. Meaning we're headed out of the year of Death and Strength, and into the year of Temperance and the Chariot. Control and integration of opposites. To be followed by 2006, the year of the Devilish Love.

So, that's one way of looking at things. We can do the same with the TOL - place Kether at 2012 and watch as it's energies pour backwards to the now - making this year the year of Hod, after last years Yesodic cycle.

This doesn't feel as tight to me, personally. Last year was actually pretty Yesodic for me, but I don't see the big picture having many of those elements. I'm happy for people to disagree though.

Anyone got anything to add? I Ching? Runes? Ogham? 2c?

Hmm -- I'm sure the Mayans themselves had some sort of correpondence-per-year thing worked out.

The weird thing is, what happens if you take the major arcana all the way back -- if it's an annual countdown, with Dec, 2012 being World-into-Fool, then 23 years earlier is... 1989? Hmm. I'm not sure 1990 was terribly "Magician" for me. (Although I did graduate college, which was sort of an initiatory thing.)

How does that lay against world politics? 1992 was when Clinton was elected -- when did Blair take office?

Lessee -- here's wikipedia's 1989 entry.

Hirohito is succeeded by Akihito, George H Bush takes office, Ted Bundy executed, Aileen Wuornos takes her first victim, fatwa against Salman Rushdie declared, Time and Warner merge to form Time-Warner, Soviets invade Afghanistan (which laid the foundation for Al Qaeda), first free elections in the USSR & Brazil, the Tiananmen protests in China.

The Monkees AND the Plasmatics both reunite.

The Gameboy is introduced, as is Olduvai theory, which states that the industrial civilization will have a lifetime of less than or equal to 100 years.

That link also has this little breakdown:
This decline is predicted to occur in three stages:

* the Olduvai slope (1979-2000)
* the Olduvai slide (2000-2012) - 'may resemble the "Great Depression" of 1929 to 1939: unemployment, breadlines, and homelessness'
* the Olduvai cliff (2012-2030) - 'I know of no precedent in human history.'

Hmm. Maybe there *is* something going on in 1989.

The Olduvai cliff, eh?
