Bill Clinton as Secretary General of the United Nations?

Jesse Helms, a terribly conservative former U.S. senator, has been sending around a fund-raising letter that refers to the supposidly pending threat of Bill Clinton becoming Secretary General of the U.N. next year. I find the prospect fascinating, because if there's one politician in the U.S. that the Republican party fears, it's Clinton. So, could the world get a perverse kind of revenge on Bush by putting Clinton in charge of the U.N.?

I don't understand why Republicans don't like Clinton. I assume it's because he's a leftish-wing Republican that insists on calling himself a Democrat. Whether the UN would take on a representative from a country that has spent the last four years explicitly trying to undermine and destablise them and has said they should all pack up and go home is another matter.

Well the UN have already appointed him the UN's tsunami envoy... but that notwithstanding I think this is a non-starter...

I don't think that with the current geo-political situation that the U.N would appoint an American as its Secretary-General. Though I suppose it could be seen as a way of slapping Bush and his cronies down peg or two.

Well, it could be a response to the last month's talk of firing Kofi Annan. And a damn funny one at that.

I don't understand why Republicans don't like Clinton.

I've assumed it's because he's a glaring exception in their decades of political dominance.
