A thread for "Sneaker"-style trainers; alternatives to the horrid Nikey ones?

Hokay- bias.

I hate fucking chunky white Nike/Reebok trainers, and I also hate fucking chunky hi-tech skate shoes and stuff. So this is a thread about "sneaker"/"baseball shoe"(?) type trainers- trainers that are a bit alternative, perhaps, trainers that no "scally" would wear, but maybe something other than converse cause they've got a bad labour policy havent they? or have they?

Who knows? Let is embark on this wondrous discussion of footwear.

Ooh, feet! And shoes for foots! Yes. At the moment I currently have:

A pair of white Adidas Taekwondo's, with blue detail.

A pair of red Adidas (seeing a pattern?) punky/indie-ish sport pumps with white detail.

I also have, from about two years back, a pair of blue Nike pumps, but they're going to have to find a new home soon.

Hmm, whaddelse: a pair of Nike (hush your boos!) chunk trainers, all-grey. These are the workhorses of my wardrobe. They're sturdy, generic enough to go with anything if I'm not arsed about what I'm wearing, and comfy as FOOK. When I say sturdy I mean they're the terminators of footwear. I've had them for six years now, seriously, and there's very little sign of wear or tear. Smartest 40 quid I've spent.

However, they are 2nd to my current footsie all-stars: A pair of cocoa-beige Adidas SMII-LS (or however it's fucking spelt, asshats) with chocolate brown detail. Picked up during the Christmas sales for a spanking 20 notes. They are super-sexy and I've no less than 6 comments about how fuckcity banging they are. I love them.

The SMII-LS being these bad boys:

May be a little too scally for you in those colours, though.

Anyone know of any shops in London that sell such things? I don't really want similar to Converse type shoes, just black trainers.

Neal Street and the streets around it should cater for all your trainer needs, Squirmelia.

Jimmy's on Essex Rd N1 sell the New Balance ones. And if you have smallish feet, buy the child versions cause they're cheaper and cooler somehow.

I'm partial to Saucony, knowing nothing of their business practices... but it's true that New Balance (local to me) is known for fair, humane, worker-friendly business practices.

Re kids' shoes - I buy them a lot, but be aware they don't have the same support as adult-sized shoes, so they're not so good for your feet - that doesn't matter so much if you're not using them for sport, but still worth knowing.

Smoothly - any particular shops on Neal Street and brands I should look out for? I'm probably thinking more of skate shoe style, such as Vegetarian Shoes' Hemp Skate Shoe or the Street Sneaker or something like that, although if I could find something cheaper than those, I would prefer it.

Well, Squirmelia, say you're coming from Covent Garden tube, crossing Long Acre and into Neal Street. A few yards down you've got Size on your left. That's more fashion oriented, but worth a quick look. Next-door to that is the Natural Shoe Shop, although I'm not sure if it's any good for trainers.
Then take a left between Diesel and Urban Outfitters into Earlham Street. Duck into that little arcade on your right - Thomas Neal's. There are loads of skate/surf-type places in there (Boxfresh, Quicksilver, Freerider, Fat Face, Hi Jinks... places with names like that. Skate-shoe central). If you come out of Thomas Neal's through the opposite entrance, you're on Shorts Gardens and there's a place there called My Trainers which, I think, sells old-season or end-of-line shoes pretty cheaply. You might get a result there. Rejoin Neal Street proper and you've got Offspring up on your right (which has a large and varied stock for a small shop) and nearby you've got Office and Sole, if you want to cover those bases. Also a place called Egoshego which I think stocks some less mainstream brands - although I might be wrong about that.
Ooh, and if you're looking for a bargain, try the Office sale shop, 5 minutes away on St Martin's Lane. I've picked up trainers for about a tenner there in the past.

Thanks for the information, but I am still unsure which of those shops will sell vegetarian fair-trade trainers? One of them surely must! I had a look at the Natural Shoe Shop website, which at least seemed to sell some vegan shoes, but I couldn't see any trainers.

I think I'm just going to have to go to Brighton.

Moo Shoes sell vegan sneakers online. The selection is mostly dull, but they do have black, hemp skate shoes. My vegan hippie brother swears by them.
