What is magic? Self willed brain change, changes on a sub atomic level or something else all together?

Call me old fashioned but i have trouble believing anything unless i know exactley what prosseses are taking place. I've experienced more than a fiew unusual coincidences and on occasion have had the feeling that I have somehow brought about changes, however i can never fully believe it. I think if i had more of an idea about what was going on and why these experiments sometimes seem to work i could belive more. Sometimes after an experiment i feel that (thanks to Tim Leary) all that has happened is that my brain is tuned in more on something than it normally is. Is this all magic is or is there something more?
Thoughts please.

Hi,

You asked what is going on and why does it work sometimes? If you take note of what you are doing when things work, well, that's why. But magic is more than just making things happen--much of it doesn't involve anything "happening" at all.

You know, if you type in "magic" or "magick" in the search box at the bottom of this page, you will get a lot more answers.

You're old fashioned. :|

Seriously, though, I think you're likely to get a lot of "whatever works" types of responses - working with ineffable forces is part of the magic game. I think many of us, though not nearly all, would argue that there is something more going on than just the internal effects of magic, but opinions will differ on just how to explain it.

Here's a sampling of answers for you to start out with:

Metaphysics of magic?

(And I know damn well that there have been other threads on this topic, too, but I can't seem to find the one I'm thinking of.)

Really, though - if you want to understand magic, I think my best advice is just to get on with it. Learn some basic techniques and build up experience to draw on in forming your own beliefs about how/why magic works ('cos it does, I can tell you that). Results breed belief.

how do you like the idea that the experiential world is an intersection (or many intersections) of two 5dimensional entities (or something, i havent done the math)--one conscious and willful, the other objective and receptive. by willfully changing the orientation of the conscious stream as it flows through your particular self, you do not alter the objective world, but you alter reality, which is the sum of the confluence.

its a process of moulding yourself (the conscious will that manifests as the thinking being) into a pattern of your own choice, but it moulds reality because your observations are a fundamental part of reality: there must be an observer and an observed or theres nothing.

with symbolic language (including magickal use of language), we can influence other consciousnesses and indirectly cause change for them as well.
