US Complicit in Iraqi Oil Smuggling

This article claims that the US and the UN turned a blind eye to systematic oil smuggling in the '90s and early '00s. More damning, the sources sited in this article claim that, out of the entirety of Saddam Hussein's embargo-busting, oil-based, illicit income, as much as 85% was from transactions with Jordan and Turkey, which two US administrations condoned.

This was, of course, done in the name of "security interests."

yeah, but you can't use that little factoid for partisan finger pointing since clinton and bush both turned a blind eye, so it's basically an irrelevancy

I wouldn't even say it is an irrelevancy....what I would say is that it just goes to prove that both major parties in the US (and increasingly in the UK for that matter) are so beholden to corporate interests that they will bend their policy to whatever benefits Wall Street or the financial market of your choice, dependant on your location

The US (and Europe/Russia etc) in successive Governments of whatever political persuasion, supported Hussein when it suited them. When he started to flex his own muscles, then because it suited Europe, they went one way....and more obviously annoying, the US.....long term supporter and armer of this man, decided to get all moralistic and name him as the new antichrist

I read a funny article the other day that said that Bush Junior is mentioning mass graves and how evil Saddam is.....whilst many of the bodies being found are from the Shia uprising in the early nineties that the CIA promised to support in an attempt to oust Saddam. At the last minute, the promised US helicopters and support were not forthcoming and tens of thousands were killed as a result when Saddam retaliated against his own 'insurgents'

I meant to add that this uprising was supported by Bush Senior or the CIA of his tenure.

Clinto I agree was no better

this is not a partisan issue but an issue about the hypocrisy and double standards of the west. Double standards that are no worse under Bush than they were under Clinton, other than the ridiculous and overblown moralistic overtones of his self righteous speech and religious fervour
