This thread is interesting. (It isn't, it's about a stupid Epson Scanner twain driver and Mac OS X nightmare, but look anyway. You never know, you might be able to help.)

If you fix this for me there's beer in it and everything. I'm even willing to travel to buy the pint.

I'm running Mac OS 10.3.7 and I've got an Epson CX6400 all-in-one printer/scanner/copier thing and it used to work. Then my computer fell over, had a system re-install by a proper Mac person and now, even though I've re-installed the software, everytime I go to scan something I get a message saying "Please install the correct Twain driver."

I've installed (what I think is) the relevant driver from the Epson site, and I've even uninstalled everything and re-installed it all but still it doesn't work.

The printer works.

This is no help when you need the scanner.

The most annoying thing is that I need the bastard scanner to work so that I can scan in something for the horrendously overdue blue book, and finally (finally) send it off.

The frustration is overwhelming. Overwhelming, I tell you.

First reactions: you're not the only one with this problem. A Googling of the key terms in your question reveals that much. I shall keep looking when I have a sec. In the meantime, though; I had to do a lot of approximating to make my Samsung printer (from my old PC) work properly with my Mac, and it still doesn't want to work wirelessly. I gather you have to persuade it that it's a hub, or something, but I haven't chased that up yet. In other words, you may have luck trying a few outre solutions.

As I say, if I find anything, I will get back to you.

Okay, here's something:

After updating my G4 from OS X 10.2.8 to OS X 10.3.5 all the sudden my Epson scanner (Epson Perfection 3200 Photo) wouldn't work in Photoshop 7. Normally I used the TWAIN plug in. But now Photoshop just crashed or I got this message:

"Could not complete the Import command because of a problem with the acquisition module interface".

I went to the Epson site and updated with its newest TWAIN driver. But still it didn't work -- apparently even after the new driver was installed, the old plug-in was still interfering. This fixed the problem: Going directly into the Photoshop application folder, deleting the TWAIN plug-in, and reinstalling one more time the newest driver. It was so simple that I can’t believe I spent hours talking to Epson and Photoshop tech support -- and having both tell me that the other party is responsible for these kind of problems. I feel silly posting this, but maybe this saves some time for someone else.

(From Mac OS X hints. There are some other hints here and here as well.)

Aww, Thanks Nick, it's good to know it's not just me being thick.

I think I've finally fixed it now by downloading a newer version of the scanner software (or something.)

Epson sucks.

I've never gotten any scanning software to work with X, ever. (caveat: I'm mostly working with five-year-old scanners.) Not once. The trick, as far as I've been able to tell, is buy Silverfast, since no scanner manufacturer can be bothered to make new drivers for older machines.

It's always been an issue with Macs, since waaaaay back in the early days - Mac printers had to have more memory because of the way Macs sent information to them. For some reason, printers and scanners seem to be the niggly bit. Or so my personal experience has taught.

I actually just binned my old flatbed scanner (total value about 8p by now anyway) because I couldn't be bothered to run the dratted thing under OS 9 all the time. If I actually need a scanner, I'll get one which plays nicely - though in all likelihood, I would have bought and Epson, since Mac seem to be crash hot keen on them... and indeed, they sell the one we're talking about as an ideal companion.

Happy scannin', mademoiselle.

My scanner, an old CanoScan flatbed, seems to work okay in OS X. Canon haven't produced an actual OS X scanning app, but they do have a Photoshop plugin, and you can use that without Photoshop with some freeware or other, I forget what.
