About a year ago, our fairly young Schnauzer died a rather gruesome death. The spasms and contortions she went through in her final days reminded me of the video footage of cattle suffering from Mad Cow disease, but when I asked our vet about the possibility that our dog had died from a canine version of the disease, he dismissed the possibility, noting that there had never been a reported case of Mad Cow disease in dogs.
But just a couple of days ago I read about Mad Max, the domestic cat that was diagnosed with a feline version of Mad Cow a few years ago in Great Britain. Knowing that the beef industry annually slaughters hundreds of thousands of "down cows" every year in the US, and that those carcasses are, supposidly, designated for the non-human food chain (ie pet food), I have again become suspicious.
Has anyone else had a pet die a Mad Cowish sort of death? I'm curious if we're writing such deaths off as "dementia" or "nerve" damage and missing the real culprit because they are "just pets." |
