Women Magicians of the Order of the Golden Dawn
Tuesday 25 January Treadwell's Bookshop, 7.30 pm
Dr Christina Oakley Harrington unveils the Victorian and Edwardian women who embraced the path of the ceremonial magician. We take a handful of the most important women, and examine their mundane lives, their magical motivations, their spiritual lives, and their achievements. Anecdotes, illustrations and short readings help to bring alive Pamela Colman Smith, Florence Farr, Annie Horniman, Moina Mathers, Dion Fortune, and Constance Wilde (wife of Oscar).
This talk will be followed by a round-table discussion in which all are invited to participate. Starting with the fact that the Golden Dawn women influenced how female magicians today view themselves, we invite you to share your thoughts on:
- How do women magicians today construct their identity?
- How to men in magical circles view their female counterparts?
- Why is the persona of the 'ceremonial magician' solitary and male?
- Is there a 'persona' of the female magician? If not, why not?
This talk is aimed at everyone who: has an interest in any of the following: the history of the Order of the Golden Dawn; the construction of identity; imagined communities; the practice of ceremonial magic.
The talk and discussion is followed by a wine soiree, and socialising on the shop floor. All are warmly welcome.
