A good freind of mine is going to be having a baby, which has got me thinking about what I might name my children (among other things).

My favorite name is Augustus, but that's more what I'd like to be named myself. I think that I'd like to name my son Emmanuel (pure hubris on my part, mostly) and my daughter Sean jr. (this is assuming that the mother is not also named Sean. In that case, we'd feel a natural obligation to name all of our kids Sean).

Should I have another child (and I hope not, having come from a large family), he/she would be named Monster. That's a great name-Monster King.

I also like Ryan (sort of my middle name...me, narcicistic?) and Aleqx (the name that my uncle now goes by), but I don't think that I'd give a child either of those names.

Anyway, enough about me. What are your favorite names? I'm curious. They don't have to be what you would/have named your children, they can just be names that you like.

Rosie and Max. I had four dogs, all called max, when I was younger - after Maximillian, the red robot from Black Hole.

You named a dog after a robot that disembowels people and gave me nightmares for years? [Shudder]

My favorite names are:

I'm buying a car next month and I'm going to name it one of these.

I need a name! It's for a piece of telephony software that calculates which carrier has the lowest rates.

Suggestions?

Were you talking about me, Qalyn? How is Monster King a sissy name?

Still, you made me laugh. I wish that I knew someone who I wouldn't feel ashamed of calling 'Stroker Ace'.

For the ladies: Linnaea (my own daughter's name)
For the lads: Miles (what my daughter's name would have been had she not been a daughter)

I had been threatening for years to name my firstborn Mr. Fuck, especialy if it was to be a daughter, but my girlfriend outvoted me.

A friend asked his two young daughters what they'd like their expected brothers' name to be, they answered 'Hurcules' and 'Frisbee'. Kind of liked Frisbee.

Sean, I was talking to hypo cube, but I didn't mean it. I don't know how to love. It's very sad.

I have a long-running joke with a dear friend about a love-child, fruit of a forgotten liaison, named Crud turning up on my doorstep. Crud's misfortunes are hilarious!

I often think about names. Possibly if I ever found the most perfect name, then I might change my name to it. I have strange rules - It cannot be misheard as another word that I am not fond of (being misheard as a word I am fond of, is probably okay), it cannot be an anagram of words I am not fond of, it cannot have a letter removed and then turned into a word I am not fond of, etc. Plus it has to be a name I actually like.

Apart from that, I rescued a book that has the meaning of various names in it from my parents and flick through it occasionally when I am trying to decide on names for characters in stories I write.

Most of the time I end up naming my characters after flowers - Amaryllis, Anemone, etc.

Augustus and Tiberius are good names. I have given both to cats. Imagine how far a child would go in this world with a name like that. F'rinstance, my cat Augustus started off as a scraggy moggie and became a Columbian drug baron in adulthood, with a collection of Fabergé mice.

There is something strange going on re names on BBC London. In Scotland all the newsreaders are called Kirsty, which saves confusion, but down here there's Neena Nana, who sounds like a Bananarama tribute band.

And, recently, she has been joined by a new newsreader who appears to be called Rizla Teeth. Somebody at Broadcasting House is clearly taking the piss.

Neena Nana, who sounds like a Bananarama tribute band.

Sounds like that, doesn't it. But the truth is her mother went into labour unexpectedly, and tragedy was narrowly avoided as the emergency services rushed her to hospital in the nick of time. She named the baby after the ambulance.

Loomis
10:01 / 07.01.05
Sounds like a cross between an ambulance siren and a police one, with maybe a dash of fire engine thrown in to add spice.

I don't think the BBC are taking the piss but possibly her parents were.

Which, rather fortuitously brings us nicely back to the topic in question.

Aha, just to divert this thread newserly once more for a minute it's Nina Nannar whom you are speaking of Xoc and she works for ITN. Does this mean that Rizla Teeth also works for ITN? I so want to know this person's actual name!

Think there may be a pic of Riz Lateef, whom I had previously imagined to be called Rizla Teeth (perhaps due to nicotine-related dental damage) on this BBC London webpage.

Surely some mistake, ma chère olulabelle, about Nina Nannar being on ITV. I think you'll find I'm far too posh to watch the commercial channel evening news... Oops, went to check and you're quite right.

Why would Mr and Mrs Nannar have called their baby Nina? Seems unkind to weigh down a small child with so many Ns.

Is the BBC2 morning news read by a woman named Vanilla Fudge? I never quite catch it.

_Boboss
12:00 / 07.01.05
i think it's fenella fudge, vanilla fudge being a post-disco US prog band and ice-cream flavour, but essentially yes.

Ooh, something just clattered into my head: if you’re collecting odd-yet-fab BBC names, there’s a lady who turns up on the World Service sometimes called Louisa Limb. Really. She files reports on things happening in China, I think.

And one of the announcers on Radio 4 is called Zebedee Soames, which I think is just fabulous. ‘This is Zeb Soames,’ he purrs at the end of the night. Damn this new Magic Roundabout film, which is doubtless going to ruin this lovely name for a whole new generation of kids.

Billuccho!

I really hate kids, but if I was stuck with 'em... Hmm. I like the names Xander and Willow, of course, not just because I'm a Buffy geek but because they're kinda pretty.

But I would name my firstborn Captain. Hee.
