News: Mr. Bungle officially disbands

Sonuvabitch.

Not exactly unexpected, but still, goddammit. A substantial portion of my sophomore year in college was spent getting toasted and listening to Bungle. "Carry Stress In The Jaw" off of "Disco Volante" is one of my favorite songs ever.

Obviously, the Bungle sound will continue by some form or another in Mike Patton's umpteen other musical ventures, but that particular alchemy is kaput. Shit.

Thoughts?

You have to respect what they did...

Indeed.

What exactly did they do?

It sounds to me like Patton & Co xeroxed a few Japanese bands that they found out about through John Zorn. Compare them to Ruins, for example...

Patton has often seemed to disregard his (one) area of talent: he's a rock singer. Hy highest hopes for him were that he'd take over a band like Van Halen after Sammy quit. Instead, he devoted himself to poor copies of music that other people pioneered.

Mr Bungle have split up? Leaving the world no poorer.

So needlessly cruel and critical.

Will you join me?

Was Mike Patton the one that used to drink wee out of shoes?

Kind of. He likes to eat shit, too... so maybe he should have auditioned for Van Halen.

Tomahawk and Fantomas are streets ahead of Mr Bungle, in my opinion, anyway.

Yeah... I heard the Fantomas record and was kind of interested. Really like the Omen and Godfather numbers. Does he not also guest on Bjork's newie?

Can anything top the Faith No More/Boo Yah Tribe track on the Judgement Night soundtrack though. So OTT, I love it.

The I think its crap but you've got to respect what they do bit that pops up in most Mike Patton threads really is funnier than the cruel and critical bit.

I don't have to respect any of it, thanks. Crap is crap.

while never a big fan, i'm a bit sad to hear this. i never got into the first 2 Bungle albums, some good tunes but most seemed terrible to me. then California came out. love that CD. that's about it. i know they'd never make an album like that again either, even if they didn't break up. still, it's too bad.

Look on the bright side: it's actually good! Because they were bad.

Mike Patton's other bands rank among my absolute favourites. Never really cared for Bungle.

One zany funk-metal band down

zany funk metal? maybe the first album, which they pretty much wrote when they were still in high school. so considering that i still think it's pretty remarkable, regardless of the fact that it doesn't do a lot for me. but i fail to see how disco volante or california even come remotely close to "funk metal"
patton's putting out better material with his other projects now anyway. as for those who think he's crap. fair enuff, but i'm afraid i have to side w/individuals such as bjork and zorn and give him props. delerium cordia and the ep he did with dillinger are superb.

It's hard to diss someone who's a mate. Maybe they want to come out publically and do the right thing, but still want him to look after thier dogs when they go on holiday.

Kobayashi Maru, Bjork and Zorn.

I'm not a big fan of his but you have to respect his skills wrt the original recipe. You have to.

"This band was poisoned by one person's petty jealousy and insecurity, and it led us to a slow, unnatural death. And I'm at peace with that, because I know I tried all I could."

It's hard to sympathise with his position much when he's being such a martyr about it...

Yeah. And he forgot to feed the dogs.

He's rubbish.

You have a jack in your ass, and someone has removed your wheels and placed you on bricks. "Crap is crap", indeed. Yes! It is!

Mr Bungle were great. Although I suppose they were a marmite band. I'm not really sure Bungle were ripping off a bunch of Japanese artists at all. I really don't see the Ruins connection all that much. Maybe fragments here and there. Fantomas though, as great as they are, are blatanly Pattons version of Zorns Naked City.
