After a brief hiatus, Astonishing X-Men returns next week with the beginning of "Dangerous."

Here's the preview.

That's some strong Photoshop work they did to keep Colossus out of the image in the previews (don't tell me they made Cassaday draw it twice; he's slow enough as it is!). Though it's a shame the composition of it makes it look like Colossus is a hovering torso (there are slivers of visible leg, but).

Looking forward to this, of course. Still eternally grateful for a satisfying and readable post-Morrison X-Men series. And yay, more Wing! Poor bastard.

I can only hope and pray that my recently-developed (post-X2) crazy crush on Colossus will be satisfied with more briefs-only beefcake shots. Don't let us down, JC!

I already started a thread on this that technically predates this one, but I don't care, maybe the mods can combine them. There were only 2 replies to mine thus far.

also, I just noticed - why are these posts dated the 17th of December when it's still the 16th for another 4 hours or so...?

Because it's not still the 16th everywhere. Barbelith time runs about an hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. You are on the east coast of America, that is five hours behind the UK. See?

ah, yes, thank you, forgot about that time/date difference thing.

The only response in the thread I started on this (besdies the popculture shock guy saying 'hey, glad to be of service re the preview pages') was someone saying "Colossus ruins what used to be a great cover." I feel like Cassaday's Colossus on the cover of #7 is suffering a little from Hulk-itis (huge body, small head), as several other of Cassaday's Colossus drawings have.

I'll repeat my sentiments: Colossus ruins what used to be a great cover. I've got the non-Colossus version saved; it makes a nice wallpaper. Colossus is too brightly-colored and just darn ugly, not to mention throwing off the balance of the whole thing. Bleh.

Damn.

That was some vicious shit there at the end. But more importantly, Joss and John have given 8 million internet fanboys their new sig picture via the best Wolverine gag since What Th--?! #2.

Fantastic issue on pretty much every level.

This was TERRIFIC.

Great fun, clever and just damn good.

Joss Whedon and John Cassaday do the FF!! "No, I meant Canadians."

I laughed out loud on the train several times with this one. really liked the defense green-haired SHIELD lady gave for herself.

That blind telepath sure talks weird. Who is 'the one coming next'...?

And why does Wing's body look all tiny and disproportionate to the chairs in the Danger Room? The image thing is turned OFF and he still looks like he's miles down at the bottom of a cliff, even though the room itself doesn't have that kind of depth (again, look at the size of the chairs in the pic). Or is that like a glass floor or something...?

i believe it does have a glass floor. And he has fallen a great height... I always wondered when it would happen. I mean it looks like a dangerous exercise room.
Loved the FF team-up and especially Wolverine's thought dialogue...

FF were nicely utilized in this chapter. Whedon seems to have a clearly defined understanding of each MU character/group he brings into the mix, and that makes for some entertaining interaction between the core team and the latter (ie: Fury, the FF, SWORD, and whoever else should stop in). Cassaday's art is top notch as always, and Wing's fate nearly had me reduced to tears.

Really chilling ending. Poor old Wing - he really got the shitty end of the stick, eh?

Truckin' great!

So are we agreed that the 'enemy within' is the Danger Room itself? That wasn't the real Hisako talking to Wing, y'see. The next question is, was it the Danger Room who was talking to Emma?

Great theory. Fits the title, too. Emms getting all hot and bothered in the x-jet was a great scene. Any word If Joss and John will stay on beyond their 12 issues?

I don't know that I'd make that jump yet, but it's definitely not Hisako in there.

Xorn said that the person who had infiltrated their minds before was still hiding at the mansion. Maybe that really was Hisako, with a nudge from the mystery manipulator. Someone with powers like Shadow King...

I do not know if it's of some importance... over in Extreme X men, during the crossover with new x men, Claremont handled the idea of somebody was a traitor to Xavier, and was able to get into the Danger rooma and control it. They showed a shadoed body, small and almost femenine. The bets were in Psylocke, but it was later revealed to be Rachel Summers. Perhaps somebody corrupted the Danger room in those days?

When I first read Hisako's line, I thought it was her being sarcastic -- implying 'you're a coward if you jump; be strong.' I guess it was structured that way...I didn't see her (or "her") as clearly evil at first.

Who is 'the one coming next'...?

When I first read this I thought that it could be the one they are looking for, who's going to cause all the trouble.

This was amazing, and it's great to see Colossus back. I loved the opening where he was riding on top of the jet.

"Said he felt boxed in. All those months trapped in that lab, I'm not surprised."

"Ain't no harm in a little windsurfing."

"You don't have to steer this thing."

That was great. I'm dying to find out what happened to Wing, I was hoping he'd get his flight back and be ok. Does anyone think Joss will bring another one of the X-Men in then? I have a feeling he could bring in Iceman or something.

I have fallen in love with Kitty all over again. Joss is giving her the best lines...

"Why do you insist on saying things I can't unhear?"

And the Wizard article hinted that they may keep the book going with the current creative team. With as much writing as Joss did when he had two series on the air and one in the hopper, I doubt he'd have too many problems with a comic series on top of...well....nothing really after the Firefly movie comes out.

I was thinking, maybe Warren Worthington, aka The Angel, is due for a return?

But I think I saw some crap with him showing up in either Exiles or Excalibut or some nonsense like that...

Hasn't he been a mainstay of the Austen X-Men? His blood now heals people and he dresses like a nob...

Isn't he a REAL ANGEL these days?

Fucking genius.

Warren Worthington and his cradle-robbed girlfriend, Husk, are slated to return...in Excalibur. A preview image shows Warren dressed like a helmet-less Blue Power Ranger. I'm sure we'll see a rehash of the some-girl-from-the-sewers-thinks-he's-a-real-angel subplot. And then she'll try to kill Husk. Blah. Blah.

I get giddy over the possibility of the Danger Room being the antagonist of this storyline. The title says it all. Very HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey. It could also explain the impending return of Charles Xavier, slated to happen after "Dangerous."

Although I am reminded of the "Cerebro Gone Rogue" storyarc that reunited Kitty, Peter and Kurt with the X-Men. Those bizarre amalgamations of all X-characters like The Grey King and Crux were a wanking fanboy's dream.

My initial interpretation of the "one who is coming" comment is that we are going to meet a new student that wreaks havoc in the school. Quentin Quire, but truly evil without freebasing a mind-controlling, self-interested bacterial colony.

And can Whedon please fix the Ernst/Cassandra mess! I need satisfaction.

Wing: another kid who looks like a phoenix. He can fly and "If he goes...then the new one will come."? Eh! Eh! And all that "change" shit at the beginning? Let's face it, Wing has a good motivation to fuck up the Breakworld.

I don't know. I'm certainly not laying down the real money here. but it will be interesting to see how all this pans out.

Yeah, I'm fairly sure Fly's right about this. Was it the room, or is Hisako really eeeevil? I opt for the room. Is someone in charge of the room or does it now enjoy a brain?

Blindfold: Maximan. Am I the only one who's noticed the similarities?

Building on "Wing is a Phoenix"...oh the irony of Ord causing the fall of Breakworld by curing Wing. So, are we expecting a "Darkwing" on the horizon? Will he be a duck?

Hhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

OK, so that wasn't the real Hisako, right?

Could the same be true with "Emma" at the end of #6?
