Closing down the old FAQ, Long live the FAQ

So, I'm afraid to say that the spam situation on the old wiki has now become so overwhelmingly annoying that we've had to basically abandon it. There's no way, even with all the IP blocking in the world, that we can effectively keep it together and page after page is being overwritten once, twice or even three times a day.

We've started a new FAQ however at http://www.barbelith.com/faq/ - it's still based on wiki software but it's a less frivolous kind. You now need to register to be able to use the wiki which should help delay attacks from spam bots, and it has more sophisticated safeguards which I can use to keep it tidy. It's also slightly better looking (although not so far made to look particualrly barbelithy, although that will come in time). It doesn't work QUITE the same as the old one, but hey - in some ways it's a bit better.

We've transferred over most of the stuff from the old wiki, but there's still stuff left behind - I'm planning to shut down the old one and remove it from my site within the next month however, because at the moment it's giving these evil cunting spammers google-juice that they don't deserve and I think that's unacceptable.

Basically if there was stuff on the wiki that you wanted to keep hold of, go and grab it NOW and stick it on the new one. Otherwise your stuff will be lost.

Tis a shame, and no mistake.
Cheers as always for the hard work, Tom.

(*immense sigh of relief*)

I panicked this morning when I went to look at something important in the wiki and found a bunch of electronics and machine parts links... but it has been rescued on the new wiki.

Bless you and all the seed of your loins, Tom, and all the other hard-working wikifiers and mods as well.

Yes, indeed. Many, many thanks for sorting this out, Tom. In the meantime, is there any way you can lock this page somehow? It’s the one page I still feel is important to keep clean at all times.

I've locked that page, and I've checked that it's also on the new wiki too.

So are we ready to change the "Barbelith Wiki" links at the top of the forums to the new site now?

I actually think we might be very very close indeed to doing so.

you can't post that image without adding "GORDON'S ALIVE?" in typical shouty Brian Blessed fashion - totally off topic but does anyone know if Blessed has appeared in star trek? he appears to have appeared in pretty much every other sci fi film/ tv series out there...
