I know, I heard about it on the way to work this morning - that's just...??? Shit, man. I'm not a huge Pantera fan (mainly 'cos Phil rubs me the wrong way), but as a disaffected youth in the 90's, Darrell was a fixture, a cultural landmark. And a good damn guitarist.

Shot onstage, too - and right in front of his brother. It's fucked up.

I kinda liked Pantera.

I remember my freshman year of college they came to town and tried to do a "secret" show at a small club, like a surprise thing, but they did it under the name "Cowboys From Hell" and everyone figured it out, so it was a mob scene. Pretty funny.

Respect, Dimebag.

And the other poor kids who got aced. Man, that sucks...

Damn. Why the hell would anyone want to kill Dimebag? I think I just lost all faith in humanity.

It's kinda sad, I'm in North Texas, where Pantera was from, and the big rock/metal station here (the Eagle) got shut down by clear channel in spring, so there's been no radio station here that plays Pantera. Alot of the djs at the alternative/pop-rock station (the edge) have been upset about not being able to play some harder stuff, so they've jumped at this chance to play an assload of Pantera all night.

Really sad. It took the death of a band member to get Pantera back on the radio in Dallas.

How many musicians is that this year?

Cheap. Easy. Cruel.

Damn, this was the first thing I read when I sat down at work this morning. This guy was a great guitarist, and as a Pantera fan, I mourn his passing. I have lost quite a few of my formative artists this year.

RIP Darrell

I have lost quite a few of my formative artists this year.

John Balance, ODB, Johnny Ramone, and now Dimebag Darrell.

i loved Pantera in high school. sigh.

maybe the guy was just trying to one-up the guy who decked Glen Danzig a few months back.

Someone's fucking planning this, theres no way we can lose this many artists by chance. its all "our" people, you know? Someone must be trying to fuck with "us".

No more Peel means no more decent music on radio 1- or at least no more eclecticism. Loss of individuality. And the others, they all were "against the man", in whatever way.

I dunno...I'd be more inclined to think it was some kind of conspiracy if not for all the people I've lost lately. Maybe it's God? Let's get 'im! I was never a huge Pantera fan, but a lot of my friends were, in high school and college; I associate their music with cruising, having a good time, and so this does make me sad...especially considering how stupid and pointless it all seems. Just some random psycho. It sucks.

"But one can see why the heavy metal fans so closely identified with Mr. Abbott. He was an ignorant, barbaric, untalented possessor of a guitar and large amplifier system. Freakish in appearance, more simian than human, he was the performer of a type of "entertainment" that can be likened only to a gorilla on PCP. Lacking subtlety, wit, style, emotional range and anything approaching even the smallest iota of intellectual or musical interest, Mr. Abbott was part of a generation that has confused sputum with art and involuntary reflex actions with emotion."

I love it how that guy worships conservatism and reactionary ideals and writes for 'The Iconoclast'. Judging from his comments, he would have said almost exactly the same thing about ODB.

Damn. Pantera were seminal, and Dimebag was one of the best representatives metal's ever had. Why couldn't it have been Anselmo? At least then we could have said he had it coming...

"[Dimebag] would attack me, vocally. And just knowing that he was so much smaller than me I could kill him like a fuckin' piece of vapor, you know, he would turn into vapour - his chin would, at least, if I fuckin' smacked it. And he knows that. The world should know that. So physically, of course, he deserves to be beaten severely.
