Shiny happy Hogmanay people: where can I find those flashy fairylight things?

So... we're up to Edinburgh this year for Hogmanay, and will be passing The Bells shaking our collective bootay to the delectable Scissor Sisters with the equally delectable Ariadne and Loomis.

For a Scissor Sisters gig, one feels the need to dress up. I've seen people wearing those sets of flashing fairy lights that (presumably) work on a battery pack. I'm thinking it'd be nice to entwine such lights around a black feather boa, in order to attractively underlight my stubble.

I'm not sure what to search for. Does anyone know where, in London or online, I can get my hands on mobile fairylights before New Year?

Fairylights, eh?

(... mumble ... mumble. bloody Londoners....)

I'll ask some friends who have fairy lights on their tandem. Maybe the ones people get for outdoors would do?

Or you and Xoc could borrow the tandem off Ariadne's friend and cycle around the city centre spreading new year joy ...

Pfft.

No, I've seen people wearing short lengths of fairylights, looking very nice. Y'must be able to buy those things somewhere.

I've always got my flashing fairy lights from the Everything For £1 shop (turn right at the Manhattan Glamour Nail Bar, straight on past Kennedy Fried Chicken and cross the road when you get to the dole office, you can't miss it). You should be able to find some that run off a battery pack--do be sure to get good long-life batteries coz the cheap ones'll go flat before midnight).

Go for LED lights if you can. They use less juice than conventional incandescent bulbs and don't get hot.

Sorry, I guess nail bars named after random American cities is more of a Sarf Lunnon thing. I think my funny circuit must be broken.

What I meant was: Those shops that sell various kinds of cheap crap for a quid (and which are usually located in close proximity to fake KFC and nail bars). They usually sell fairy lights.

Ahhh, okay. I think I know one already. Failing that, I guess there's always Camden.

Tandem rider friend says:
Our fairy lights are actually six sets of battery-powered lights. You can get them from places like Ikea and B&Q. It's just a string of about 20 little bulbs and a battery pack (which takes 2xAA) which can be cable tied to a bike. We bodge-taped all around the battery pack to make it watertight.

I've seen someone (A punk at a ball) wearing them in her hair before, and they do look quite impressive.

1. In general, if that happens, you can pretend you're going to edit the page, go to "prior revisions" and find what you're looking for. Actually, for that matter, you can just hit "save this version" or whatever and fix it. I think that should work. Soon, it won't be a problem any more anyway.

2. For fun lights, can I recommend this stuff? It's more fun than Xmas lights. All you need is a bit of tape, an invertor, a battery and some of the wire. I think a 9v battery will illuminate 50' of wire, which is more than you're likely to need for any costume application. Heck, they even sell pre-made kits for wearable lights....

Good lord, a visit from Ganesh. Ariadne, Loomis, I demand a Gathering thread! I'm buggering off to Barcelona on New Year's Day, but I'll be in town the night before. Anyone fancy going up the Crags to watch fireworks?

I'm afraid we're going to the Scissor Sisters. Well, I mean, I'm not afraid, I'm really glad, but it doesn't work well with going to the Crags. I'm sure we can do something over the hols anyway.
