"The Thai government has begun dropping an estimated one hundred million paper origami birds in an unusual peace bid."

Peace Bombs.

I dont know much about the problems of the southern region of Thailand, but this is pretty cool. Is it motivation genuine goodness or just image engineering?

I heard about this on NPR. Apparently, the bird drop is considered grotesquely condescending to the families of young Muslims who have died in the conflict,"They take away our sons, and they give us paper birds?"

The kids seem to dig it. Though I really think that more than one scholarship should have been offered.

Knowing how much I hate rakeing leaves durring the fall, I can not see how this is a peace offering. The clean up efforts to remove the one hundred million pieces of paper could only stoke the flames of anger twords the Thai government. This is a case where words would work much more effectively than deeds.

I read a comment from one of the "recipients"- he said the feeling among people he knew was that it was indeed fairly patronising but at least it was a gesture in the right direction and better than dropping anything else on them.

Can't remember which paper I read it in, but apparently the Thai government also fucked the gesture slightly by printing "no separatism" on some of the birds...

I dunno... it seems fairly fucking misjudged to me, but there was something really nice about the image (photo in the paper a couple of days ago) of a soldier lugging a huge sack filled with origami birds of peace.
