Now first and foremost I must apologise to GypseyLantern and others on here who are sick to death about talking about Sigils. This is not just another of my newbie questions but something that was brought up on another website and I believe, whilst initially seemingly a simple question, actually reveals your opinions about how Magick 'works'
On this website, somebody has started a thread where Sigils are displayed and the other posters have the option of using them, themselves....without knowing the intent of the Sigil. Personally, this is something I would steer clear of but in the course of my explaining my position, I had a intuition that this would be okay as long as you did some form of divination before attempting such work, to see how this might play out.
The crux of the matter is that this seemingly simple enough proposal/question as to whether you yourself would feel comfortable employing somebody else's Sigil, reveals whether
a: You believe that a Sigil has more far reaching effect than your own unconscious (ie in charging such a Sigil, you are potentially impacting on not only your own life directly but possibly others or the universe as a whole
b: Whether you believe in Karma (though admittedly, any act of will has similar repercussions if you believe in this premise). For example, if you charged an unknown sigil and the person who desgined it was asking for your energy to go to the death or demise of another, then you might be linked into the whole issue.
c: Ultimately, it also explains or more accurately reveals whether you believe that others can charge an intent statement that you design.
I answered this thread by saying that as long as a divination is carefully constructed, then there should be no harm, providing the answer gives you the 'go ahead' from the universe but this also raises other questions
ie, if I construct a Sigil with the words 'I will...', then potentially, others using this Sigil, might conceivably not power 'my' aims but experience the events or effects in their own experience. Now providing they word their divinatory questions correctly they should be protected and in their defence, the other board does use this forum for experimentation and it is the usual practice for the person who utilises the sigil to know that the creator of said sigil, usually intends for it to affect every user individually, rather than some group effort. What I mean by that long winded sentence is that the people charging the Sigil, are under little illusion that the sigil is usually for the intent of changing some aspect of each and every magician who employs the sigil, rahter than some outside event or aim
A way around this for group workings for some outside aim might be for the statement of intent to include the name of the intened change to be included, in my case it might be 'Joetheneophyte will...'
My interest is twofold
Do others believe that this type of third party charging/firing (choose your own favourite terminology/method) works?
Would you feel personally comfortable doing this? and if not, why?
to answer the second part, I would feel happy to charge Impulsivelad's Sigils as I have a pretty good idea that he is altruistic (anybody who can create Gek must have a decent streak!), in other words I would feel happier doing this for people who I believe are 'nice' people, with good intentions
If you are bored to death with Sigils, please ignore this post and it will soon drop off the boards but this seemingly simple proposal on this other board has raised many questions in my mind and I think some are worthy of discussion. |
