G8 Summit 2005: Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire, Scotland

Date 06 Jul - 08 Jul 2005
Start time 9:00 AM
Organiser Our Movement

In July 2005 the G8 will be meeting at Gleneagles in Scotland. This annual Summit has become the focus of the biggest and broadest demonstrations the world has ever seen. It is anticipated that as many as half a million people from all over the world will arrive in Scotland next summer.

The leaders of the eight richest nations despite being of various political shades come together in a unified effort to serve the rich against the people of their own countries as well as the people of the world.
So a strong message of disapproval and dissent must be sent to the G8 leaders but if they do insist on coming, the offense must not be compounded by infringment of the liberties and rights of the people.
But if these gangsters do get to meet to fine-tune their strategy of exploitation, we can assure you that the downtrotten and oppressed will gather to show their dissent against the current vicious exisiting order and to show their power to reshape society to be more just.
Scotland
A Scottish coalition, 'G8Alternatives' is under development to help with a co-ordinated response to the G8. Two meetings have been held so far in Edinburgh, the last one being attended by people representing a wide range of organisations and interests including NGOs, anti-capitalists, trade unionists and free party people. Details of the next meetings are below.

The main focus at the moment is to secure a large piece of land on which to build a 'Convergence Centre' where people can camp with access to clean drinking water and so on. We intend to bagsy a piece of land for the biggest free party ever in Scotland, but there are also plans for many other events, activities and facilities including Internet and email access, mobile phone charging points, alternative power sources, etc plus story telling, bouncy castles and other entertainment for kids.

from www.word-power.co.uk/events/EventStyle-73 cos im lazy and inarticulate.

Me and are going (hes me flatmate). I own a flat in Dundee (30 mins to perth by bus, 15 mins with me behind the wheel). If youre wanting to go then i can offer you free accomidation. I could take 6 ppl relatively comfortably. If more ppl's are needing accomidation, my bro lives in perth and ive a few mates who might be willing to put ppl up. Although joining a big city of tents would be c00l.

Anyone thinking bout going. Are ye part of any organisation?

I'll probably go though I haven't got any concrete plans yet, I've got no idea where I'll be in July- what type of work I'll be doing etc. But it would be pretty lame not to turn up. I'm not part of an organisation, I usually just turn up to these sorts of things alone and make friends with a random bunch of other loners. I'm sure I'll run in to some meetings closer to the time. All in all I'm looking forward to this.

Yeah, count me in... the whole "July being a long way away" thing notwithstanding... cheers for the heads up; I'll try and sort time off work.

Meester stoatie, you do not understand buisness.

1/2 million hippies in my area! In 8 months time. now if i can gr0w 4 cr0ps by then at *ramble ramble ramble* then i can make 12 million dollars! Also im a trained 4ssasin and dont have enough money to fly to the wa5hinton so i can make even more money on the side.

+ its the biggest thing to happen to perthshire since Kennith Macalpin (first king of a united scotland and total bastard) held the first scottish parliament there in 841 AD. hence my excitement.

Same here. But I prefer not to attend these demos on my own - you never know what might happen in the course of such large-scale events, especially when things start heating up. I feel a lot safer with a small affinity group, where you can look after each other a bit.
I'm pretty sure at least some people I know will be going, and right now there's a 50% chance I might be there too.

Given that they plan to shut down Embra for a week, it sounds like a good excuse to head north for a day or two. Really, what kind of a security plan is it that encourages people to leave the city and go and bother those arseholes?

There was an article in the Scotsman yesterday talking about how travel agencies are selling travel packages to people coming from around the country to protest:

Many will even be combining their protest with a short city break, tourism leaders say.

Graham Birse, of Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board, said: "The Make Poverty History campaign, that is supported by [U2 rock star] Bono, have organised a protest which will attract a substantial number of people. They contacted us and said a number of protesters will be coming up from London and the south-east and [asked] what support and advice could we provide on accommodation and packages.

"It turned out that, in spite of the image that most of us have of protesters, perhaps, as dangerous and reckless individuals, they are, in fact, known to be a peaceful protest and many of the people coming are much like you and I and your readers: they have mortgages and jobs and stuff."

He added: "They may wish to enjoy a city a break in Edinburgh when they are here."

Alright, looks like I'm probably going to be heading up for this, along with my lady. How is it looking for everybody else, now its just over a month away? Any news on the Convergence Center or other accomodation?

I'm going to be there, People and Planet, a student campaigning organisation I'm in, is having a whole big meet up. Just out of interest are there any other student Barbelithers in People and Planet?

I intend to be leaning out the window with a camera linked up to Flickr/Indymedia just in case the polis get needlessly heavy with the lovely people visiting our city. I shall also be taking videos of probable US state terrorism against the people of said city - they're bound to be flying big fuck-off warplanes over major population centres to flex their muscles, after all. I'd call that terrorism. It's bad enough when the RAF do it, but an occupying power? No thanks.

Ker BUMP!
So, anyone coming up to God's own country over the weekend? I could probably put someone up on the sofa (at a push, two). So far no sign of any invasion, but tomorrow evening might be interesting.

20:14 / 01.07.05
I'll take that as a no. Looks like the whole event is going to be a washout, unfortunately. There are hardly any new people here tonight. So much for the invasion and rebellion, then.
That's what happens when your mum and dad tell you you're allowed to have a party while they stay upstairs. Tony is getting a little too canny for my liking.

I don't have the funds unfortunately but I shouldn't panic yet, protests generally only start when they really start and it's the G8- the question is have the internationals started to arrive?

08:49 / 02.07.05
A few. Sorry, I broke my don't post drunk rile last night. I think I may still be breaking it now. At the moment the only sign of life (on what is usually a very busy street on a Saturday morning) is a street cleaner going up and down every five minutes.

Yeah but it's Saturday 2nd and the summit doesn't start until Wednesday. No seasoned protestor is going to arrive four days early unless they like the light stuff (MPH march), so no anarchists then.

You'll see a few British protestors arrive on Sunday and Monday I reckon, the real hardcore who always do the G8 will wait until the last minute.

It says on the Beeb that 100,000 did the poverty march so that's probably about 300,000 people then. I actually think that's a little pitiful but what do you expect when you lump everything into one day? I mean, London Pride, Live 8, the poverty march and all in tennis season. Tsk.

19:01 / 02.07.05
[Eating his own words, with a side of pie. Humble, of course]

That was the biggest march I have ever seen in Edinbugh, and even if it was a little redundant (Make Poverty History? Is there anyone who disagrees?) I now have a light glow of smugness and a serious case of sunburn.
Some photies here. The last few of coppers descending on the Meadows is probably because there were a few slightly spiky people on Bruntsfield Links that might conceivably have been planning to tie dogs to string.
