Dave Chitty:Butterfly of Thantos

Anyone heard of this guy? Found his book 'The Butterflies of Thantos' in a second shop the other day. Fascinating stuff. Big hardback privately printed in 1982 by New Horizon Press (Bognor Regis?Yes!!) Seems to be heavily Kenneth Grant influenced.

Split into two books:

The first book is called ?The Butterflies of Thantos (Numb Logic) ? The Book of Unsatisfied Desires and Eternal Provocation.

The second book is called: ?Black Efforts towards a Conscious Madness?

The first book seems to be a stream of conscious, channeled prose/verse/image section of working on the 26th path between Hod and Tiphareth.. For starters.

Each section is illustrated by (or is illustrating) a painting. These painting are great. Varying in style from Austin Spare, Andrew Chumbly, Steffi Grant to Max Ernst and Dali type surrealism. The text stuff is (as you?d expect) all over the place. Baffling, annoying, inspiring, shit, great.

ARandom Sample:

CHALA
THE EXPANSION OF THE CIRCLES OF TIME

The Spheres had now to devise a memory system to contain all forms of experience upon the planes of physical existence. Through a sectional system they re-adjusted the immediate nature of man through and integration within the circles of time, allowing all memories of physical existence to be retained. This adjustment of the circles of time took place within the Sphere of Geburah.

THE FOUR DOORS TO THE CELLS

The second book is THE BOOK OF EXTRINSIC AND EXTREMLY SUBTLE IMAGINATIONS, THAT BY THE CORRECT INTERPRETATION OF THEIR MULTIFARIOUS MIRRORED IMAGES HELPS OVERCOME ALL OBSCURATIONSTO OMNISCIENCE.

Again, great stuff. Fab images throughout. My favorite is, ?SKINNED TANTRIC BADGER LEAPFROGGING IN THE MOONLIGHT?

Interesting book. Just the stuff I love and I?m curious if anyone has any idea about it at all. Tried searching but with a second name like Chitty you?re going to get a lot of musicals back on your google. Any ideas?

Saying that. I?ve quite obviously come across something that is 100 times as rare and of far more genuine occult value than the Voudoun Gnostic Workbook orOutside the Circles of Time.
So. If anyone wants to PM me. £200 (+£3.50). $320. I will throw in a couple of Christopher Hyatt books as well. (although these are heavily notated*)

*These notes have nothing to do with the books themselves. Just pizza delivery numbers and directions for cabs.

Hang on a minute...

The second book is called: ?Black Efforts towards a Conscious Madness?

This is the second printing you're talking about here! The original was entitled "MAD EFFORTS TOWARDS A CONSCIOUS BLACKNESS", but T.H.E.Y. made him change it. Apparently he was giving TOO MUCH away. I've got a copy of the first printing - actually I've got two copies - but quite frankly I wouldn't trust YOU LOT with it. All Hell would be let loose... QUite LitERallY!!!!!!!!!!!

£80 on ebay...Got mine for a couple of quid. Bargain.

So did you buy one Wolfangel? Let me know what you think of it.

I'm enjoying it more and more. Really can't be arsed with anymore How to Occult books. I'd far rather read someones accounts of their own experiences and systems even if i don't relate to a lot of it and i have to trawl through lots of bad poetry to get to the good stuff. And there is loads of good stuff in this.

Some more random quotes...

'The False ReBirth of man floated down to Earth to land beside the Buildings of his Fate.'

'The Birds fly across the field of vision and are installed in the memory system after which may, at the will of the recipient, be brought back into the field of vision through a projection of his concious memory.'

What it reminds me of, apart from the obvious occult literature' is one of my favourite books called 'Memoirs of my Nervous Illness' by Daniel Schreber. Schreber was a high court judge in late 19th century Germany who had a 'nervous collapse' and spent the last 20 years or so in an asylum where he wrote his memoirs. And they are stunning. Describing his world, dominated by a very Gnostic predatory god and a huge system of 'black nerves' and 'fleeting improvised men, its a great piece of writing. Very beautifully written and moving. Freud and Jung went on about it a lot.

The Chitty books is very similer but with a lot more obvious magic and kaballah. And of course the obvious difference that one is written by a 'sane' man and one is written by a 'mad' man. I'm not really trying to make any point about the relative values of the two. That's been brought up loads of times in previous threads. Just that the feel of the two books is the same and i think thats why i'm getting so much out of it in the same way that i'd much rather look at a piece of 'outsider art' or listen to similer types of music. That thing of people having this stuff in their head that they have to get out onto paper or into a bit of music or into a mad sculpture made out of tampons and beer cans. That's where the magic is i reckon

I just got one of these in the mail from Abe Books for about $20. Very very cool stuff, just started reading it... was able to score almost all of E. E. Rehmus' books and translations off of Abe as well. What a cool-ass tool!
