Christmas Cards

Our Lady Has Left the Building

I never used to send cards, or more accurately, I got my Mum to include me on the family Christmas cards, despite the fact I'd lived away from home for about a decade. Then last year, because I had to get a certain number to do for the guys at work, then I thought I'd have to do some for friends that my parents wouldn't be sending cards to, then I had some left over... Now I find myself engaged in the whole ghastly process.

So, what you do do? Please rearrange and answer.

I send loads. But then I quite like doing it, writing little letters to people in each. It takes ages, but it's satisfying. If you try to think of it as contacting people rather than as a chore, would that help? I'll PM you our new address.... and I expect glitter and a reindeer, please.

Well, I love sending and receiving cards at christmas, though I prefer non-Jesus themes. It's a nice way to keep in touch with people you haven't seen for a while and donate to your favourite charity. The Medical foundation for Victims of Torture and Shelter both have non-Jesus themed cards which I shall be sending this year.

I used to make my own and post them. I quite like the idea of not being in contact for 12 months save for a single card at Christmas.

However I stopped sending cards after an entire batch came back to me. Evidently the Royal Mail Casual Christmas Staff thought the little writing on the back of the envelope was who the letter was to be delivered to. This of course meant that they didn't tweek that the big writing on the front of the envelope (the side with the stamp and airmail sticker) was the sender. It's confusing work being a postman...

Oh dear, what a shower ... The Post Office just ain't the same since I stopped working there.

I used to hand-letter my cards at school, using the CDT lightbox and font books, which is probably why I still have a geeky knowledge of the more decorative ones (I stop in the streets and point at shop signs saying "Arnold Bocklin! Poster Bodoni!" in a mildly embarrassing fashion.)

But as it was incredibly time-consuming and I no longer have a light box (sigh), I only send Christmas cards, usually with a little letter or update, to good friends I know I won't be seeing.

I'm sending 6 cards this year, four to my university housemates, one to my oldest friend the-tear-it-all-down Zionist and another to someone whose wedding I skipped out on earlier this year so I could at least send her a screwing Christmas card.

Within the next ten years I intend to have 200 people on my Christmas card list. I hope to get some people to the point where I only contact them via card (convenient)... but when I look at the number of people I can't even be bothered to phone I realise that it's pretty unlikely I'll manage to hang on to their addresses.

I used to send loads of Christmas cards but just can't be arsed anymore. It's not so much 'bah humbug' as 'fuck me that's a waste of paper'.

Been a couple of years now since I last bothered with it. We don't even bother with presents when I go to stay with my folks over the holiday. But then it's only three of us -I suppose if there were lots of wee'uns around it might be worth engaging in festive duty for their sake. Plus I'd get to play with their Spider-Man toys. Oh, wait ... I buy them anyway, don't I?

For me the whole thing is just an excuse to meet up with my folks and get pissed. And I don't really need an excuse.
