Looking for Music for a Film

So, I'm shooting a short film in December, and I want to use music as a big element of it, not just adding it in post, but building sequences to correspond with songs.

So, I'm looking for tracks from artists that would allow me to use their song without paying for it, unsigned bands and the like who would be happy to get exposure for their songs. The short would not be for profit, and probably won't get too much play outside of potentially a couple of festivals, but I'd like to do it by the book with regards to music rights.

So, anyone here have tracks that I could check out and use, or know of a good resource for finding unsigned bands? I'm particularly looking for techno, trip hop type stuff, like Air or Massive Attack, but would sample any song and see what's usable.

Two suggestions:

Much of the material on www.archive.org is public domain or Creative Commons; go hunting there.

OR

www.opsound.org, the official resource for Creative Commons-licensed musical outfits.

Likely in either scenario you'll want to contact the source, let them know your intentions and get their approval, but in these cases I suspect that as long as you credit them correctly they'll be down with your project, especially since you sought their permission rather than just went ahead and did it.

Funnily enough, my flatmate's working on that exactly kind of stuff, looking to get into movies, etc. She's not in at the moment, but I'm fairly sure she'd interested, so PM if you like, and I'll put you in touch.

Another company that supports open licence is Loca Records.
Check it out it may be what you want?
Also approach acts directly- you'd be suprised how many will give you permission provided they like the script, especially if you aren't directly making money out of it. This may work better for smaller acts on indie labels- but try your luck- you never know...

Thanks for the links, I'm going to look at them after this. One thing I wasn't sure about was what the deal was with bands who are signed, if they liked the script, would they be able to just let me use the music, or would they have to go through the label? I guess it depends on the specific contract, but I always assumed that generally speaking, the label granted usage rights.

Generally it depends on the bands- speak to them and find out- as I say a smaller indie would be more easy to approach than Sony etc- there you may have problems.

Definitely contact loca though as their 'mission statement' on their website will explain how their open source work works- I know the guys behind the label and they'd definitely help you out- provided they get a credit (often this is all bands will want)

good luck

If you want to find some good unsigned bands trying to get exposure, be sure to check out GarageBand.com.

Or, what exactly are you looking for, in a textural sense? Myself or other Barbelites may be interested in putting out some comissioned work, If the challenge seemed worth the effort.

Newgrounds Audio Portal
has a lot of free music, in many genres, but they like it if you put your film on their site first and credit the artists if you use their tunes.

First, the response here has been really clutch. I was worried about getting good music before, and those worries are definitely gone now. And, any other sites people know of, I'm still always looking for more. Also, Scarwash and Money Shot, expect a PM soon, .

How long is the film? If you end up using them, Newgrounds usually has a 5 Meg limit, though if you really lowered the video quality, or just gave them an extended teaser...

It's probably going to be roughly a half hour, so doing 5 meg probably wouldn't be possible. I actually liked one of the tracks on there, so maybe I'll just throw that into a semi-standalone scene, and post that one piece on the site. Thanks for the heads up.
