I understand some of you have a problem with The Mars Volta

I'd like you to use this thread to explain what these problems are, and in 25 words or less, why I shouldn't unleash the fucking fury on you.

They're shit. Shit shitty shit shit. It means you're sucking whiny whiny earnest "every chord is my life" self important bore-fest dick. Actual penis! I mean, like, ew. Just unleash the fury already. Go on.

And they're ugly! Holy jeez but they are! I only listen to music by pretty people. Don't think they get let off because they play "instruments" and write "songs". God no.

I do not have to validate this. Music is only worthwhile if you find the perpetrator sexually attractive. This is a FACT.

They signed to Universal. They are total sell-outs. Not in the sense of ever having sold out a venue, obviously. In a more abstract sense.

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!

The abstract sense is all that matters, Haus. I thought they made real music, but it turns out it is fake! I now only listen to music made by people in their bedrooms and secretly recorded by people (REAL fans) while the music makers are unaware. This ensures maximum reality, as well as making concrete the fact that all real music must be homemade lo fi DIY and nothing else. And it must only be distributed secretly, as opposed to in shops.

And once again...

They sound like Dream Theatre. Exactly like them. They're limp wet rags compared to At The Drive In.

Limp wet rags.

Your arm will fall like a limp wet rag.

Plus they have the worst album title and cover art in living memory.

Apart from Cam'ron's Confessions of Fire.

Maybe we should move this to the Conversation, eh?

So, anyway, moving briefly back on topic, is there anybody here apart from Dudders who _doesn't_ have a problem with the Mars Volta?

In their defence, I really liked "Bedshapes".

Sorry for density, but who are Dream Theatre? nd why do comparisons to them make people shudder?
Re: Mars Volta - what I heard left me unmoved, but I know a number of people who worship at their alter. Why anyone would change their name from 'At the Drive in' (great) to 'The Mars Volta' (proggy wank) is beyond me...

My opinion hasn't changed since I started the previous thread. I can't really say why I like any bands, let alone this one, I just do.
I kind of can and can't see the Dream Theatre comparison, now I've had the chance to hear them. I felt with the latter band that they were trying to show me how many notes they could play, so I couldn't help being drawn to other concerns, like whether I'd left the oven on or not. I don't do this with the Mars Volta. They hold my attention, and while you would clearly beg to differ, I hear a passion and energy thats entirely absent in Dream Theatre's work.
I also think they surpass ATDI. ATDI were alright, but in the music they always seemed to promise something without ever attaining it. The Mars Volta to me are all the bits in ATDI that I liked but were never expressed properly. Then again few agree, but we're not forcing music on each other so it's cool.

Seth used to really like Dream Theatre.

FYI, they tend to sound (and used to look) like Whitesnake with a Rush fixation. 'Pull Me Under' was awesome, but ridiculous, in the same way that Evil Dead III: Army Of Darkness is awesome, but ridiculous. Unfortunately, Dream Theatre were not aware of how ridiculous they were, and thought they were much more awesome than they actually were. And you were unlikely to drag your mates back after the pub to stick on Images And Words. Still, in every other respect, Dream Theatre and Army Of Darkness are EXACTLY THE SAME THING, and it is NOT A SHIT ANALOGY.

And you wouldn't with Army of Darkness?

For shame Jack.

Looking at that first photo of someone from Dream Theatre... I would never have guessed that Furio from The Sopranos was into prog.

No, you would> drag your mates back after the pub to watch Army Of Darkness. That's one of the respects in which my BRILLIANT ANALOGY falls down. As detailed in my post. The one up there. Go on, look up. Therrrrrre it is, see? All shiny and hopeful that the day will bring berries and things of goodness abounding. Then someone stepped on it. The post you are reading is vengeful. Careful, now.

they had a pretty good live set at Coachella the year before last.

of course, i was high at the time, so your mileage may vary.

'Lie', that was the song.

The vocalist was a bit Joey Belladonna, when I liked the replacement guy in Anthrax. Bit much, but it was pretty cool.
