Ocean by Ellis and Sprouse

So there are 2 issues of this 5- or 6-issue mini out so far... I LOVE Sprouse's art, always divine, the first ish was a bit slow, pacing-wise (and I'm not someone who always complains when the pacing is a bit slow), I felt the 2nd ish was better than the first. Interesting mystery that I feel compelled to keep buying and reading. Maybe eventually I'll buy the paperback of Ellis & Colleen Doran's similarly-styled ORBITER graphic novel too...

Anyone else reading this? Sure, the Ellis habit of throwing in facts from New Scientist and other articles is getting a bit tiresome, but I'm still finding this interesting enough to keep me hooked...

It's the first reel of Total Recall and 2001.

I quite liked it, but as with his take on 'the cool exec with a heart of steel', I suspect I'd rather read a trade of this. And then, when it came out, I might decide against it.

Well, probably not.

it's really slooow....i guess the comics parlance would be "uncompressed."

but I liked it enough to buy the 2nd issue. for some reason i thought it was another 3 issue mini, but it's 5-6? that makes more sense, then.

hopefully some craziness will ensue!

I've been enjoying this even though it's pretty slow. I love Sprouse's art, I'm really getting extra tired of Ellis' 'witty sarcastic banter between characters', especially when said characters give each other the finger or always make jokes about how coffee is their lifeblood and crap like that.

But I'm still reading & buying this one. Overall I like it and the plot & concepts have me hooked.

Was this the Star Trek meets the Dirty Dozen?

I once pitched that idea to a friend, and read the preview of an Ellis story that used those very words and felt sad that I hadn't bothered to write the script.

Naw, that was something called SWITCHBLADE HONEY.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

I like it. Sprouse's art (and he's not someone I'm particularly familiar with) is lovely- nice and clean and European-looking.
The slowness works nicely- I feel slightly disappointed when the plot intrudes, to be honest.

Stoatie, man. Seek him out. He's pretty much THE reason to read Tom Strong (at least when he was drawing it) and if you can find his early issues of Legionnaires, damn. I love Chris Sprouse.

And, yeah, Ocean is quite a nice read.

Sprouse is boss. He also drew a fair bit of Supreme, I think.

I quite like the slow tempo of this. And the treatment is very cinematic (derivatively so apropos 2001 and Total Recall, yes I agree). I can see Stephen Soderbergh making a second post-Solaris foray into science fiction to make this one, starring Don Cheadle. Anyhone?

Still kicking with this series...#4 is pretty decent, nothing terribly exciting but a good solid read.
