Fuck. Shit. Fuck you, God.

Too. Fucking. Soon.

In a minute I'll be ready to start posting stuff celebrating his music and general offbeat brilliance... In a minute.

In a fucking minute, okay?

This recording is dirty and a-stinkin'
Pukier than Pepe le Peu
So I was thinkin'
About
Droppin' this single on the charts
Letting you know:
"Hey! The kid has heart"
I never deny myself as being dope
But in my last jam, niggas slept on my notes
You thought that I was weak
Uhh, let me speak
My rhymes come funkier than your gram'phone would speak
So listen, mister, don't you ever forget
The rhyme dirty, you couldn't even clean it with Comet
Or even Morax, some try Ajax
Only mix with the best, 48 tracks
Yo, I get down with the eight song sound
Lyrics that be flowing from miiiiiles around
So let the music shut ya ass up
And feel the uppercut that'd make you fall to your butt WHUT!

He covered a Phil Collins song and made me love it, for crying out loud.

He was one of the most distinctive members of my favourite band of all time.

He wrote the smartest dumb lyrics of anyone in music.

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!

Yo...!
I come with that ol' loco
Style from my vocal
Couldn't peep it with a pair of bi-focals
I'm no joker! Play me as a joker
Be on you like a house on fire! Smoke ya!
Crews be actin like they gangs, anyway
Be like, "Warriors! Come out and playiyay!"
Burn me, I get into shit, I let it out like diarrhea
Got burnt once, but that was only gonorrhea
Dirty, I keep shit stinks in my drawers
So I can get fzza-funky for yah
Murder, taste the flame of the Wu-Tang RAHH!
Here comes the Tiger verse Crane!
Ow, be like wild with my style
Punk! You playing me, chump, you get DUMPED
WU! Is comin THROUGH! At a theatre near YOU!
And get funk like a SHOE!
What?!

Nuts. I decided I liked him when he rushed the stage at, was it the Grammys? grabbed the mike and said Wu-Tang should have got that award instead of Will Smith because, well, they were BETTER.

Hee.

Shit.

Hope he's up there with Big Baby Jesus (and that 'ol Jesus doesn't mind the whole taking his name in vain bit.)

Turning out to be a bit of a bad few weeks for people dying, innit?

Shit.

"There's no father to his style, that's why he's the Ol' Dirty Bastard..."

And there'll be no sons or daughters, either. Unique talents tend to create imitators, but as far as I know no-one has ever tried to bite his demented style or build on what was the most lop-sided, ramshackle flow in hip-hop history. What would be the point? There's only one Big Baby Jesus.

Damn. I'm going to go and dig out "Nigga Please" for the first time in months.

Anyone got any clue as to how much of his Roc-a-Fella album was complete?

I think he did a cover of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" with Macy Gray.
Fucking EARGASM! Finally a cover to rival the Miss Piggy version.

Two classic ODB songs, 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya' and 'I Can't Wait', are currently available at Many Shrimp. You can also hear 'Good Morning Heartache' at Music For Robots.

Oooh baby I like it raw, yeah baby I like it rawwwww...

Remember the thing he did with Ozzy Osbourne and DMX for the South Park C.D., "Ain't Nowhere to Run"? Almost getting that glorified beer coaster for all on it's own.

He was in the lab and complained of chest pains before promptly shuffling off.

Sounds like too much life to me. That'll almost always do it.

When yer talking about Ol' Dirty, there was a cetain inevitability to it.

My friend, when I texted him the bad news, was all like 'What? You expected him to make 40?'

Still. This on top of Peel is a really fuckin hard double-whammy in my celeb death stakes.

No-one left to control Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'/the weather. And just as he'd want, my finger points square at the CIA.

Damn.

Over the last few days I've really come to resent the "what did you expect" attitude. Osiris was young, pulling his life and career back together, and on the verge of some really great things. Sadly, it'll all be pothumous success.

Come Friday night it's time to drink, put on my Wu/ODB collection and get this tear out that's been hiding back there. I love those guys as much as I could love anyone I've never met.

Rest in peace, Dirt Dog.

Just a quick note to say I'm completely gutted about this - ODB was awesome.

Cos I don't have net access at present, I only heard about it from a half-hearted "weirdo rapper dies in studio" story in a free paper... fuck.

Responce to his death seems to have been pretty muted, but in a way I'm pretty glad - he was always completely fucking off the wall, and I'm glad he doesn't seem to have been post-humously made respectable.

Big old RIP anyhow.. I've written a little bit of an obit for my blog.

William Jones, 61, told a reporter from the Daily Press of Newport News, Va. about his son, who was widely known as eccentric rap star ODB.

“You know, that story about him being raised in the Fort Greene [Brooklyn] projects on welfare until he was a child of 13 was a total lie,” said Jones in the story published on Monday. “When I read it in the Vibe magazine a few years ago, I was furious. "

Thought this thread might as well be used to talk about Osirus: The Official Mixtape, which I know some people here have heard. It's basically an ODB album by any other name, but I quite approve of them sticking that "mixtape" bit on there as a way of indicating (however awkwardly) that it's not a proper, finished ODB studio album.

It is, however, remarkably consistent - maybe less remarkable if you consider how erratic he was in life, so his output so far has always been a bit all over the place - but really, this is surprisingly good. Some great party tracks, obviously, like 'Dirty Dirty' and 'Go Go Go', but there are also a few surprises - 'Move Back', in particular, is a cold-as-ice, nihilistic masterpiece produced by Dame Grease and featuring about 100 different MCs before Dirty comes in - not "resistence" [sic] hip hop but bloody good hip hop.

And this is yet another Flyboy re-seizure. YOU really should stop lending me CDs when you're drunk and then asking for them back. And I should really get a CD burner.

All I have to say about the brillance of this album is:

PULL MY DICK OUT WATCH THE ROOM GET DARK

Is his Roc-A-fella album still due? Or is this it in bastardized form? I thought it was still due...

17:07 / 08.03.05
Yeah, the Roc-a-Fella disc is still due - some time this year, I think. I read somewhere that the remaining members of the Clan have added a track to the album reflecting on who Ol' Dirty was and what his legacy means. (sorry, I don't have more specific info)

I have been curious about the mix tape. I might have to pick that up.
