100 Bullets #55: "Fuck You, God"

Regrettable Juvenilia
08:49 / 12.11.04
Oh Jesus. This issue contains possibly the most horrific moment of the series so far, which when you consider that this is basically a comic about violent killing, which has covered child abuse, rape and torture along the way, is saying something. The cruelest thing of all, for me, is the way Wylie gets his moment of I-am-a-Minuteman-dealing-out-righteous-death and the words he chooses to express how it feels to remember those skills - "I think I know how you feel when you blow that horn" - and then he turns round and OH SHIT. No more horn-blowing for Gabe. You just know it's not going to end well for the little fella as soon as he breaks and runs, but you don't know just HOW awful it's gonna get.

Horrible, horrible, cruel, tragic, fucked-up... and utterly compelling. So it turns out that the friend Wylie was talking about having killed in the first part of this story wasn't his 'friend' Warren, even though he did kill him, too. And now I'm seriously worried about Wylie surviving this storyline at all...

And word to all that.

It's amazing to me that I felt 1-49 were so leisurely in laying things out in this book as 51+ has been completely non-stop. Even in with this storyline's tangents, we get huge info on the Dizzy/Shepard/Graves triangle and Wylie's activation.

But overall storyline aside, yeah, that was the most horrific thing ever, immaculately captured by Azzarello and (primarily) Risso. Because it's the way Gabe holds Wylie's arm to the back of his own head that's so devestating, especially after that final vision of peace.

At the beginning of this storyline, I didn't really have a handle on Wylie's attitude towards the captured Shepard. Seeing what he had to do before hand, though, it's clearly barely contained rage. And there's still one chapter left, Wylie v. Shepard, that could very well be a blockbuster as far as revelations go.

Thank God this book is on a regular schedule again.

Tragic.

Yeah. Against my better judgement, I read this thread before reading the comic, which I finished half-an-hour ago. It's still scarring my brain. Reading the thread in advance has not helped.

I'm guessing Wylie might be "the Saint, the less said of him might be better."

The Saint was the grey haired bastard introduced in Issue 50.

Yep, and Jack the (now ex?) smackhead is almost certainly the Monster.

Wylie's the Point Man.

I was honestly getting tired of the length of this particular storyline until this issue. I can't get that closer out of my head.

My gripes with the amount of time this storyline is taking might very well have to do with the sorta-hiatus they took while working on Batman.

That cover is easily the best of the entire series so far, too.

And still the question remains - Is he going to kill Shepard?

I sooooooooo love this comic....
