I'll probably see it, but most TV show movies aren't that great. In most cases, even movies based off of good TV shows, like Cowboy Bebop, just feel like longer episodes. Even a movie like Shaun of the Dead, which was great, wasn't as good as Spaced, it just felt like it was targetted to a broader audience, and hence less quick and smart. The Simpsons would probably fall prey to a similar problem, where it feels like a really long episode, not something that needed to be a film.

The only TV series movie I found really fulfilling was Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, but that's different becuase it was sort of removed from the day to day universe of the show.

Hmmm, the 'South Park' movie worked because they were able to take the show further than the TV version. I can't see The Simpsons, what with the retelling of classic stories episodes and the Hallowe'en shows will necessarily be able to pull off the same trick.

Let's not be ridiculous. How can anyone know what the Simpsons film will be like 4 years before it's released... It could be the best film EVER, but really we have absolutely no idea. South Park was a great film, and that's because they wrote a great film. Just because we're used to half hour episodes doesn't mean the writers can't stretch beyond that...

However, the only other good cartoon-to-movie example I can think of off-hand is Transformers...

Oh, er, sorry if I sound a bit harsh. Alcohol and all that...

No, you're right. Transformers is the only good cartoon to movie.

I almost cried when Optimus Died... Alone in the cinema, surrounded by bored parents and their disinterested children... I was feeling emotional.

And the Wierd Al song "Dare to be Stupid" during the big action sequence...priceless.

And there are plenty of other good animation-to-film movies in Japan. End of Evangelion, for example.

Yes, that's right. I think the Simpsons movie should be like End of Evangelion.

Blimey, I'm surprised this thread lay dormant for so long...

Just seen the movie and it's...good. Yeah, maybe a little disappointing in that I didn't laugh quite as much as one might hope to. I was kinda expecting it to be jam-packed with jokes and visual gags that I'd be re-watching on DVD for years to come, but it felt a little sparse and, well, slow paced at times. However, there are certainly some classic moments and one thing in particular you'd never have expected to see...

I watched it last night at a midnight screening with my gf and we both enjoyed it immensely. Granted, we are huge nerds about the Simpsons and both continually like new episodes, which seems rare (a lot of people just don't like any of the new one's). But I laughed a lot; sure, there's some sap and whatnot, but there are a couple of moments that had me dying with laughter. A lot of background jokes too, which, as said above, will be enjoyed with repeated viewings.

I thought it was pretty terrific. 3 1/2 stars out of 4. Pure enjoyment, lots of the trademark craziness, wit and rapid-fire jokes we've come to expect. Albert Brooks is fantastic as the gov't agent, and there are enough self-aware-that-it's-a-movie bits to make everyone laugh. I saw it with an 11 pm crowd in Times Square in NYC, opening weekend, and everyone loved it.

The one thing I would have liked is a bit more denouemont at the end before the film actually ends.

But of course, as is de rigeur nowadays, stay til the end of the credits for a bunch of fun little stuff.

If we're rating, I'd rock out with 3 of 5. It was essentially a 90-minute episode of the cartoon with moderately better production values; if it WERE an episode it would be in the top third of episodes, but nothing that really needed a movie, if you know what I mean.

I am looking forward to DVD and seeing what I missed, though.

Saw it yesterday in my housemate's computer. I found it... amusing. More interesting point was experiencing Springfield in a beefed-up context, comparing the dynamics, interactions between characters and places in the episodes and in the movie. But some plot solutions seemed too simplistic even for a cartoon (especially for a cartoon that happens to be named "Simpsons"). Ah, that eludible (I thought I was creating this fucker, but it does exist) balance between inconsequential cartoon zaniness and the minimum demands of verisimilitude...
