Black Watch soldiers killed in Falluja

This evening's Guardian reports the deaths of three Black Watch soldiers plus a civilian Iraqi interpreter, following the troop's move to Falluja in what was perceived by some to be a pre-election PR exercise.

Myself, I don't know any of the Black Watch, but I've heard three tales of friends-of-friends serving in Iraq, one a TA recruit whose parents are unaware of his circumstances (his mother couldn't take the anxiety, apparently). The fact that these personal anecdotes are circulating interests me: it seems as if, perhaps more so than other UK troops in Iraq, the Black Watch might serve as a very material symbol of the skewed UK/US dynamic, and the different approaches at play.

What effect will these deaths have on Blair's public standing? If we can effectively ignore the deaths of howevermanythousand Iraqis, will Black Watch casualties sharpen our focus?

I figure there will be the usual tabloid salutes to 'our brave boys' and that will be about it.

I'm not sure. In the same way as the Scots were always a little more unruly under Thatcher, I'm aware of several Black Watch soldiers communicating their extreme unhappiness to their friends and relatives. I think they might kick up more of a fuss than your average cannon fodder.

According to BBC Scotland and STV the brother of one of the dead soldiers, who is currently serving with the Black Watch, has already spoken out against the war.

I live in an area which is the main recruiting area for the Black Watch, which is also a mainly Labour area (well, Dundee at least, Perthshire by-and-large is a mix of Tory and SNP)). It will be interesting to see the gains that will be made by the SSP and the Lib Dems come the general election, who were both anti-war. But that said, Scotland is quite partisan when it comes to politics and the, unfortunate, view that Labour may be shit but they're better than the Tories, especially with Howard in charge.

I sincerly hope that the SSP take at least one seat in Westminster, because IMHO it might give Labour enough of a fright that leadership change might seem like a prospect.

Black watch is Angus + Perth & Kinross (inc. Dundee.) I used to work with an ex-Black Watcher, pro-war, but've not spoken to him since this event.

I don't think there's much focus on the war right now, really.

I agree. I'm wondering (hoping?) the involvement of the Black Watch might introduce a human element.
