All Tomorrows Parties, UK: December noisefest

Short notice I know, but after months of pissing around and umming and arring, the ATP Foundation seem to have got themselves sorted out and...

..The Nightmare Before Xmas ATP, curated by the Chapman Bros and incorporating Throbbing Gristle's postponed last-ever-performance, is going ahead in early December, and because everybody (including most of my friends) is scrabbling for tickets to the Slint reformation one next year, at the time of writing tickets are still available.

The line-up is absolutely killer to say the least;

Throbbing Gristle, Shellac, Mercury Rev, Lightning Bolt, A Silver Mount Zion, Sunn O))), Liars, ..Trail of Dead, Aphex Twin, Peaches, LFO, Pelican, Coil, Violent Femmes, the Fall, Wolf Eyes, Growing, Pita etc.

Any takers?

90.00$ and only in LA and the UK hmmmm.....
Guess I won't be making it to that one. Which is a bit of a disappointment because it looks to be a fantastic line up.

Bah. That sounds annoyingly good. But who exactly has money to spare in December? Orphans and misanthropes, that's who. Of which I am neither.
I am now filled with unseasonal ill-will.

Orphans and misanthropes, that's who.

Given most of the bands on the line-up I'd have thought they'd be the target audience regardless of season..

Yeah, I went - just got back. Far too knackered to give a report right now, but will reveal all soon...

Please do. (Especially about TG... of course.)

I'm very jealous, and am therefore relying on you to give me my noise vicariously.

I ended up going at the last minute on a half price ticket. Probably my most enjoyable ATP thus far. Quick report:

Wolf Eyes-
Really painful, made people leave (I think many of them wanted to get a decent place for Lighting Bolt whose set overlapped with Wolf Eyes'). Those who stayed were rewarded with a horrifficly exciting pulse emerging from the sonicx onslaught. They did a session for the Peel show a few days later which is probably still available online. This was along pretty similar lines to there ATP performance.

Lightning Bolt-
Just fucking great. Had seen them the night before in Brighton and still couldn't get enough of them. Lightning Bolt are the tits.

LFO-
Pretty good. Played all the hits and was pleased that these were actually unique versions rather than wav files being played off a laptop as they are on record (Mu Ziq - GUILTY!). My high point was a toughened version of Shove Piggy Shove.

Throbbing Gristle-
Not so great. Perhaps I was just tired and noised out but it was all pretty tame next to Wolf Eyes and Lightning Bolt.

Peaches-
Went to see her thinking, "Her and Har Mar can fucking have each other, I'm not interested" but she was fucking great! Really slick show like something off Top Of The Pops but also filthy. So filthy that during her finale "sucking on my titties..." apparently tried to molest her whilst she cavorted within the audience. She was so pissed off! I couldn't help thinking that she shouldn't have been so surprised. I mean, there she is singing "Stuff me up!" wearing this ridiculous pair of mumblers (y'know, you can see the lips moving but you can't hear the words) whilst riding the mic wire right up between them and she complains when someone tries to interact with the situation. Filthy girl should have been grateful that her art was provoking such a reaction.Feel free to debate my wrongness at your leisure.

Aphex Twin-
Not really sensational & the atmosphere wasn't right.

Coil-
John Balance lost his balance and died so this didn't happen. Serves him right for spending so much time channelling all those dark forces.

Mercury Rev-
Whatever.

Hood-
Indie shmindie

Sunn O)))-
Super duper- especially when close to the speakers. Like a massage bed. Lovely.

Liars-
Yeah, liked them. Fun stage costume antics, energetic, mainly percussive, Lead singer had a fine moustache.

The Fall-
Good. As good as the last time I saw them which was the last ATP. The thread's probably still up here, read that if you like.

Camber Beach-
Really good at 6am whilst enjoying a very long piss.

Trying to Walk To Dungeness-
Only got as far as Lydd. Saw a dead badger.

If I remember anithing else I'll be sure and tell you all. Love to here someone else's experiences...

OK, well I'll try. Having been hurled straight back from ATP into a relentless work cycle (seven days straight and counting...) I might be able to make some half-coherent comments in a similarly brief and vaguely chronological order...

Wolf Eyes
Only got there in time to see a bit of the end of their set. It was LOUD. Went upstairs...

Lightning Bolt
Whatever song they played when everyone sat down was really great, otherwise it was a noise in a crowded corner of a very empty room that I'm still yet to be totally won over by.

Peaches
Yeah! Great show. Lack of punters meant good place at the front. Excellent phone camera opportunities. Yes, ended on a sour note: "The reason that that was the last song is because some fucking asshole tried to rape my cunt with his, or her, hand". I don't know whether this was true/intentional/an artistic stunt, but it certainly brought things to an unpleasant end.

Throbbing Gristle
I've maybe heard three TG songs ever, but it wouldn't have mattered: "You thought you were going to hear things you were very familliar with. But you're not. Ha ha ha". I really liked them. Long hypnotic tracks with noises on top. That'll do me. I bought the limited recording of the gig the next day.

Liars
Liked them a lot, despite not playing the ones I hoped they would (This was not a weekend for the hits, generally). The most seen band in the pub.

Miss Kittin
A talented DJ, for sure, but at 7pm not what I wanted to listen/dance to for 2 hours. I wanted SONGS. From I Com.

A Silver Mount Zion
One of many bands I intended to see specifically, but ended up just staying for a bit before hitting the pub/arcade/chalet. I dunno, maybe I wasn't in the right mood.

Aphex Twin
Like Fraely said. Very dark room. RDJ sat at the side of a dark stage huddled behind a laptop. About 10 people dancing.

Mercury Rev
Was persuaded to stay to the end more because of my friends than the fact I thought they were particularly good. They played two off Deserters Songs I quite like, but the rest was all pretty terrible power-balladry. Very polished. Some nice 'magician's hands' type action from Jonathan Donahue, punctuating and conducting the music, but otherwise a bit tame and bland really.

Mego club night
Felt sorry for them as there was hardly anyone there, but arty visuals and digital feedback sometimes can't compete with with the pub. I'm sure I'd have stayed any other time.

Hood
I do like a bit of Hood. Very good sunday morning (well, OK, afternoon) music.

ATP Cinema Club
There were no bands downstairs on sunday, just music documentaries. I saw a bit of some, but preferred to go back to the chalet for The Simpsons... Should also mention that the ATP TV programming was of a high calibre. Lots of zombie films, Ghost World, Ren & Stimpy, American Movie etc etc.

Sunn O)))
Only caught the last half of their set (due to the Simpsons) and for all I know it was the same song they started with. But I enjoyed it a lot, watching the slow-motion strumming, feeling the deep sustained riffs and thinking that maybe they would suddenly whip off their hoods and play Stonehenge...

The Fall
Yes, oh yes. Incredibly young band made MES look even older. Mostly new songs, but they're good new songs, especially Blindness. Mr Pharmacist a weekend highlight for me.

Violent Femmes
OK, I said it wasn't really a weekend of the hits, but here's the exception. All I wanted was as much of the first album as possible and that's what I got. I don't mind that I had to wait through newer material, bass solos, drum solos, another bass solo and a horn section... Blister In The Sun, Add It Up, Kiss Off, Gone Baby Gone etc etc all sounded as fresh, angry and joyous as they do on a 20 year old album. Encored with a version of All Tomorrow's Parties and that was pretty darn great.

Any Other Business
It was really, really cold on the friday (even inside the venue - but especially in my chalet). And quite empty. Athough I think more people arrived as the weekend went on, it still meant that the atmosphere wasn't quite the same as it was in April.
Managed to find myself playing SingStar in someone's chalet at 6am on sunday/monday. I was crap.
Saw Will Oldham around on the saturday (apparently he'd been playing with Little Wings - I was probably still in bed then)
Um, and otherwise, seeing my girlfriend, getting a chalet really close to the main complex, having some time off work and the sausages with big yorkshire pudding I had in the Sands Restaurant meant I had a very good time...

aluhks SMASH!
14:35 / 14.12.04
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned either Growing or Comets on Fire yet.

Growing was downright beautiful, in the way that only droning music can be and while the last Comets on Fire record didn't really win me over, their live set certainly did.

Otherwise I tend to agree with most of the posters here - Lightning Bolt were great, if you made it to the front of the crowd (which I did). Throbbing Gristle was cool to see but didn't blow me away. Silver Mt. Zion played some new songs that were far better than I expected.

I was one of the ten or so people dancing absurdly during Aphex Twin's set and loved it, but it still wasn't much to look at. Nor were his track choices the best.

And the one actual let-down of the weekend: Destroy All Monsters, who are simply terrible.

You might be able to find those new ASMZ songs on The Pretty Little Lightning Paw EP. It's fab.

This is outrageous. You might as well say that a women who wears a short skirt deserves everything she gets. Outrageous! I'm disgusted! DISGUSTED.
