Nontraditional paradigms for use in magickal workings

Good morning,

It's your friendly neighborhood Southern Fried Discordian(Non Practicing) here with another post for you today.

What are some examples of non-traditional paradigms you use for magickal workings?

Here's an example. In my geek fu I have always been a big Star Wars fan. One day I was reading about chi work and wondered how one could restate this in terms of the Force. I found that it worked very well. Upon further research I found out that there are several websites about how to use this paradigm in a magickal/spiritual context, including a very detailed meditation on how to use the "Dark Side" for various things. This was all well and good, but I wanted to see how this worked in a controlled, relatively harmless "test enviroment".

As an experiment I decided the next time I went to do LARP to use this Star Wars magickal paradigm and see how well it worked(as people are working through characters, I have found it works wonderfully as a test zone for magickal, spiritual and philosophical theories). The results were fascenating.

First, you can't get the extreme results you get in the movies, which is sad.

Second, you CAN get results exceeding anything you would expect. Increase in speed, stamina, and mental awareness after you "open yourself up to the Force". Oh, and the fact that you seem to have a sort of "always on" Jedi mind trick if you focus on radiating "The Force", people just see doing whatever you might want as the most natural thing in the world. It's actually kindof eerie. The more logically oriented would say that it is a mask for chi energy, and that may be, but the fact remains that as a paradigm it actually works with a suprising effectiveness.

So, what freakish paradigms have YOU used in your working? How did they work? Did they involve oral sex with giant mong bats(it's a Kenneth Grant thing, from my understanding, long story)?

I try to avoid paradigms as they tend to interfere with my exploration of my own personal aether

a note however on your point of using the force to pull an obi wan style mind control:

This is extremely effective especially when dealing with people who do not believe in psychic stuff as they will most likely accept the planted thoughts as their own...

*nods* That's the thing, it was even more subtle than that. It was like, people would know what I would want them to do and do them before I could even consciously articulate it. The way within the paradigm to explain it would be that influencing "The Force" in and around me influenced them into a pattern that cooincided most with my own needs at the time, wheather I actually articulated them or not. But that is a very true point.

I have used the Kamehameha Wave from Dragonball Z when I want to send off energy in a precise direction. In fact, I feel more comfortable with the Kamehameha than many other methods.

Surely the occultist/geek overlap is so well established now that it's a tradition in itself?

That's something that needs looking into really, the link between occult interest/geekhood/nerds.

Jedi training links. Right. These aren't going to be pretty cause I'm in somewhat of a hurry for Shaolin training.

http://www.forceacademy.com/ -This is the Force Academy. The text is good and the forum is usually almost vaguely interesting. You can actually recieve training as a Jedi here. Good stuff.

http://www.fatumoperandi.org/ - Dark Jedi, offshoot of the Force Academy. As I am about as dark as a Care Bear, I don't know much about them. Some of the stuff looks good, though.

And in case you start taking all this a bit too seriously.

is actually quite pleased that he has only gotten a, "wake up you're being a doink" flame since he started posting(and he admits he amply deserved it). Good stuff.

Modelling on sci fi sometimes. Won't dislose my cyberzoo ya mutts!!!! Anything that works. The Star Wars stuff sounds good. I reckon an invocation of Chewbacca would go down a treat well esp in the morning first thing!!! I've modelled on 70's and 80's sci fi!!! Has anyone worked with anything like Akira or Ghost in the Shell? Manga seems to inspire alot of folk. Uroskidijh or whatever its called as a potential post-modernised Old One??!! Taylor Ellwood has went on about Bioroids you know the bio-mechanised suits the Manga heads wear. Invoked Robocop got fuck all out of it - expect it would go down a treat at a sci-fi fetishists convention though. Wolverine is a good lycothropist energy to work with. Works the works with Northern Way runes I found out. I sussed out the science behind the episode of a Stargate once as I was in no-mind and I suddenly visualised the Borg Queen, and it made me think about it. Now that's sexy magick!!! I think magick correlates with acting out the geek persona! I think long running book series and films have excellent mythologies and cosmologies to exploit. This is going to recede into a blah about Fantastic Four innit!!! But I prefer the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles myself. Though you widnae mess with Plastikman - he's all flexible!!!!

Oh man, let me count the ways... Umm, recently I've been interested in applying the Super Mario Bros. "Warp Zone" system to the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. I've always been a fan of the Mario games. Once I wrote this long article about Illuminati secrets in the first Mario game (for example, the fact that there are 23 coins in stage 1-1, or how Mario must use shamanic techniques to gain super powers, such as eating magic mushrooms or fire flowers). It's something only a geek could appreciate.

I also find music to be very effective in putting one into certain headspaces. The delerium of Coil, the noisy agression of Whitehouse, the hypnotic dance patterns of Psychic TV, the aural derangement of bands like Nurse With Wound or the Residents, the "Jump-and-Jazz" rhythms of Count Basie (props to my dawg Kenneth Grant there) are some of the types of music I use in ritual to approximate a zone of otherworldness appropriate to the act in question.

I actually find that pop culture is a really rich vein to tap in regards to the practice of magick. Although some occult books inspire me it seems the majority of my inspiration comes from video games, movies, science fiction novels, comic books, certain types of pornographic writing, and other media that interests me. Of course, whenever you read a book you're entering the writer's headspace, and I think very often if the writing means anything to you then you'll take something from it for personal use.

Again, how is any of this "weird"? I find it's quite unusual to meet someone (especially of my generation) who has an interest in the occult but does not also combine this with LARPing, Star Wars, the X-Men, etc.

I have a complete and coherent system based loosely on the incantations used to operate the totem staffs in Visionaries.

Three suns align, pour forth their light
To fill the archer's bow with might!

--

The arrows turn, the swords repel
Let nothing pierce this mortal shell!

--

Oh mist filled peaks, dark, dank, unclear
Touch all before me with frost fingered fear!

--

A whim, a thought, and more is sought
Awake my mind, thy will be wrought!

--

Whispered secrets of a shattered age
I summon you, renew this sage!

--

By what creeps, what crawls, by what does not
Let all that grows recede and rot!

--

By Nature's Hand, by Craft, by Art
What once was one now fly apart!

I can't believe I remember this shit...

...Let those who worship evil's might

Beware my power - GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT!!!

(sorry, just taking the piss there for a moment - but it now occurs to me that you could do a chaos magick working based on the Green Lantern energy!)

Well, yes. "Nontraditional" seems an odd choice of words, when all of this seems to be a very traditional approach to chaos magic. If the thing that you do apart from magic is read comic books and watch sci-fi, then if you look for something in your life to inform your magical practice then you're going to settle on comic books and sci-fi...

About the Fatum Operandi:

This organization is not concerned with Jedi or "The Force". It is no longer to be seen as an offshoot form the Dark Side of ForceAcademy.com, it has taken the step away from fiction and offers, in my view, one of the best hands-on selfanalytical and esoterical training programmes I've seen in my time as an occultist/discordian/initiate.

About Magick:

I actually use John Lennon-invocations quite often, inspired by King Mob. A friend of mine and his group did an Elvis-evocation that seemed quite cool. Last summer our Oasis did four rituals based on the Chaos Gods of Warhammer, and they kicked ass. Especially the Khorne and Slaneesh-parts.

On the other hand, I've had quite bad experiences with too much experimentation. Paradigm shifting and using old systems in new ways are essential to me, but when I, to name an example, tried turning the Middle-Pillar ritual backwards, I suffered serious backlash and went semi-psychotic for a while. Also, psychedelics and esoterics can be a bad mix, real bad. The mind is extensive and it's powers are great, and it's a shame to fuck it up just because you want to rebel against proven laws of energy-work and magick. But that's just my view.

...Let those who worship evil's might

Beware my power - GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT!!!

Hey, I do it all the time.

I'm considering making a Cosmic Rod (ala Ted Knight), which I think is pretty powerful for me.

I also have been known to use some of the famous rhymes.

"In Brightest Day,
In Darkest Night,
No Evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship Evil's Might
Beware my Power,
Green Lantern's Light!"

and of course, the often variable:

"Change, change, the form of man.
Arise the Prince forever damned.
Arise the might from fleshy mire,
Boil the blood in heart of fire.
Gone, gone, the form of man,
Arise the demon, Etrigan."

...which has been rewritten by many writers, and often just shortened to the last two lines.

And there was the one I made for my PC in a DC Heroes game to invoke his secondary form (when he turned into the cloaked nightmare of evil men):

"My crime, my curse,
My sin, my spite,
I invoke Lord Shaper's Might.
With his power I am endowed.
I walk in shadows,
I wear the Shroud."

Gypsy Lantern'll have your etheric arse for jumping his rhyme like that.

I have a system that I extraploated from two "power objects" that found their way to me.
I use one to draw in/send information and the other to ground/physically manifest that information.
I don't really know if that's pretty traditional or not.

"Seek, Locate, Destroy".

I don't know about you, but I'm getting a bit of the fear reading this. Would anyone like to explain comprehensively and coherently why that should be?
